Dishcrawl Ottawa: East Meets West

By Jasmine Williams
February 7, 2013 - 11:27am

I found out about this event the week before from a good friend of mine. The conversation went something like this… “What’s a dishcrawl?” I asked, having never heard of the concept before in my life. “It’s like a pub crawl, but with food,” he answered. READ MORE

Fashion Doesn't Have to be Intimidating

By Melissa Baumann
January 29, 2013 - 8:00am

The best thing about fashion is its versatility and how it is constantly changing. No matter what events may be happening around the world, fashion is the one thing that will always remain constant. There are no limits to creativity, which is why fashion is such a thriving industry. From my experience, I find that a lot of people are intimidated by fashion. I’ve been in this position too. There are always those people who are dressed well every day with every item in their outfit complementing one another, and we wonder how they manage to make it look so effortless every single day. They must spend hours a day in order to be up to speed on the latest fashion trends, right? READ MORE

Why You Should Keep Your Resolution to Get Active in 2013

By Maghen Quadrini
January 26, 2013 - 2:16pm

As we approach early February, the attendance of fitness and recreation centres on campus and in the city slowly starts to dwindle.  While committing to those resolutions of being healthy and active in 2013 can seem less than thrilling, getting physical shouldn’t be something to dread. Yes, it’s getting colder out. Yes, waking up to a run on the treadmill instead of hot cup of coffee might not seem like the most appealing way to start your day. But sometimes all it comes down to is changing your mindset. So, why keep making  the effort to go to the gym? Well…. READ MORE

One Direction Obsession

By Samantha Lapierre
January 25, 2013 - 8:08am

Liam, Zayn, Louis, Harry and Niall. You’ve probably heard of them. Your little sister (or brother) is probably obsessed with them. My name is Samantha Lapierre, I am 20 years old, and I am terribly infatuated with the boyband One Direction. I can tell you how it started, but please bear with me. It was a Friday night, I was up to my usual wild shenanigans (at home, on my couch, scrolling through Tumblr, chowing down on a cheese and cracker platter) when I noticed a link to a UK television special called One Direction: A Year in the Making on a friend’s blog. There's A Reason Nice Guys Finish Last

By Samantha McKay
January 21, 2013 - 12:58pm

Really, there is. You see, the thing about nice guys is that they really aren’t very nice at all. In fact, there is a major difference between being nice and being a genuinely kind person – a distinction that many self-proclaimed “nice guys” have failed to make. READ MORE

Dirty Dancing, a Proven Classic

By Carleton Contributor
January 21, 2013 - 8:00am

BY ERICA HOWES With laughter and excited chatter buzzing through the audience, the mood was set for a film featuring classic teenage romance and rebellion. On January 16th, the audience at the Mayfair Theatre fell for Patrick Swayze’s irresistible charm and passionately sang along to the songs of Dirty Dancing (1987) in a free screening run by the Carleton University Alumni Association. “I think it’s such a classic because it’s all about finding your passion and finding out who you are and where you want to be in life,” Katie Stanley, a first year Humanities student at Carleton, said after viewing the film. “It’s about music bringing people together through an art form that isn’t a career, that isn’t for money.”...

Throw Away That Thrift Store Stigma!

By Samantha Lapierre, Elizabeth Palmieri
December 13, 2012 - 8:01am

So what’s with the stigma against second hand clothing stores? We’ve always wondered why such shame is associated with used items and clothing. We began to gauge the reactions from our friends: “You don’t know who could have worn that last! That’s gross.”
“It’s old and used, why don’t you buy new?”
“Only poor people shop there.”
“Everything is ugly there, I never find anything.” READ MORE

By Cassandra Hendry
November 13, 2012 - 10:29pm

This past weekend, I attended the Queen’s Women in Leadership Conference (Q.WIL) in Kingston, Ont. Though the conference had a distinct business focus, as a journalism student, I was intrigued by the impressive line-up of guest speakers and the activities that were planned for the delegates.
