8 Halloween Costumes You Can Make Out of A Garbage Bag

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Carleton chapter.

It’s a fact: university tuition is expensive. No matter how good those $50 costumes in the store windows look, they are a waste of what little funds we have for buying fun things. This Halloween, instead of spending big bucks on a costume you are only going to wear once, use one of these ideas to make your costume for cheap, and spend the rest of that money on making this Halloween a night to remember (or on real clothes you can wear year-round)!

      1. Crayon

You can be a Crayola crayon! Wrap yourself in a garbage bag, then wrap over that with coloured duct-tape and add a Crayola logo! So simple, yet adorable.

     2.Ghost

Use a white garbage bag and be a ghost (just make sure you can breathe!) by wrapping one bag around your torso and draping another bag over your head—don’t forget the eye-holes!

     3. Pop/Beer Can Girls

Pop/beer can dresses are a good group costume idea if you want to dress up with your roomies! This is the same concept as the Crayola dresses, but with a soda/beer brand label instead.

     4. Sushi

For the more artistically inclined, you can make a sushi costume out of two white pillows with a garbage bag tightly wrapped around. Wear a t-shirt the colour of your favourite sushi filling!

     5. iPod Nano

For the music junkies, there is another variation of the garbage-bag and duct-tape dress that resembles an iPod Nano (remember those?); Just pick your favourite colour and print out a screen featuring your favourite song and you are good to go!

     6. Newpaper

Another cute idea (especially for Journalism majors!) is a being a newspaper! Wrap yourself tightly in a garbage bag, and then use clear tape to layer multiple sheet of newspaper around the dress. Tie a ribbon around your waist for that just-delivered look.

     7. Salt and Pepper

If you are looking for a couple’s (or friends’) costume, look no further: salt and pepper costumes can easily be made from white and black garbage bags. For the female version, wrapping the bag around the body and belting at the waist with “S” or “P” stuck to the belt would look best. For the male version simply cutting out a head hole and two arm holes and sticking the letter to the front would suffice.

     8. Trashy Costume

You can just cut out some holes, throw the bag over your head, belt it up.  When people ask you what you are for Halloween, you can simply answer “trashy”!
