Staying Safe (and Stylish) in the Sun

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Poly chapter.

After recently having abnormal blemishes removed by my dermatologist (ouch!), I realized that skin care is no joke. Sure, we all care for our faces — washing, moisturizing and maybe even putting on sunscreen occasionally — but what about the rest of our bodies? As the weather warms up in San Luis Obispo and the outdoors become irresistible, don’t hesitate to keep your skin protected. Fortunately, taking care of your skin doesn’t require sacrificing style.

1. Sunglasses

While you’re protecting your skin, don’t forget about your baby blues! I’m happy to say that most Cali girls are well-protected here since we love our shades. Though your eyes obviously aren’t affected by skin cancer, exposure to sun can still damage your eyes and lead to cataracts later in life. Make sure your lenses protect against UVA and UVB rays and you’re set!

2. Sunscreen

Sun-damaged skin not only leads to higher risks of skin cancer (the most common cancer in the United States), but it is the leading cause of skin aging. Sunscreen is the best way to protect yourself from the sun’s scorching UV rays. Luckily, many foundations and moisturizers contain at least a mild form of sunscreen, which makes the job of protecting ourselves a little easier.

Sunscreen is especially important at the beach! The sand and water reflect the rays back, which increase your risk for skin damage. Reapplying lotion on your back should never be a chore when you’re at the beach. Just ask a hottie in a speedo to lend you a hand.

3. Tanning lotion

There’s no denying that gently tanned skin is attractive, but sun-bathing or going to a tanning salon are two of the worst things you can do for your skin. It’s like a concentrated dose of cell-mutating rays — not cool, unless you’re trying to become a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. Tanning lotion may seem lame, but it is less expensive than a tan from a salon. As a bonus, many tanning lotions also provide additional UV protection.

4. Hats

Probably my favorite option — I love hats! If you’re going out in the afternoon, pair your skirt or Daisy Dukes with a western-style hat or a floral sundress with a wide-brimmed hat. Hats are an adorable way to accessorize an outfit while protecting your face, neck, eyes and scalp. It’s a win-win scenario!

In addition to all these protective measures, consider wearing a cover-up over your swimsuit when you’re not in the water, and try to stay in the shade during midday. If you’re concerned about a blemish that seems unusual to you, make sure to schedule an appointment with a dermatologist and go through the “ABCDE Test” (look for asymmetry, border irregularity, color, diameter and evolution). Even if there’s nothing unusual or you have dark skin, a quick visit can give you peace of mind and keep your skin looking healthier than ever. And most of all, enjoy the beauty of San Luis Obispo this spring and summer!
