The Only Motivation You Will Ever Need

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Poly chapter.

College can be a scary place. There are crowds of phone zombies waiting to bump into you as you try to make it to class on time, sometimes you think you see the cafeteria food move, and let’s not mention the gym-timidation (it’s a real thing). It seems to be easier to travel in a group of friends: walk to class with friends, eat lunch with friends, brush your teeth with friends, study with friends and go to the gym with friends.

But, if you haven’t already figured it out, college is just one giant balancing act. You and your friends are not always going to be on the same schedule. So what happens when you want to go to the gym, but all your friends are busy? Do you face the lean-legged gym-goers on your own, or do you turn around and go re-watch your favorite movie for the hundredth time?

Sometimes you just gotta do it. Don’t let your dreams, be dreams. If you want to go to the gym, go girl! The moment you do, you will realize there was nothing to be scared about. Doing things on your own can be liberating and will reduce your reliance on others.

And if you need a little extra push, here is Shia LeBeouf’s video on YouTube.

*Warning to Viewers: This video is intensely motivational and must be viewed at least once a week for maximum results.*

If that does not motivate you, I don’t know what will! So the next time you find yourself scared or nervous to do something – like talking to a professor at office hours, or facing the gym-timidation– take a deep breath and realize it is not as bad as it seems. And just do it. You’ll feel better afterwards; relieved, proud and confident that you took something into your own hands and, well, just did it. It’ll Shia surprise you.

So, recap:

·         First step: Watch Shia LeBeouf’s video.

·         Second step: Know that motivation comes from within you.

It is up to you to make the changes and decisions that will impact your life. Your friends, your advisers, your professors, your counselors, your coaches, your family, and even Shia LeBeouf – can all help to motivate you, but it is up to you to actually make it happen.
