Name: John Day

Year: Freshman

Major: Math

Hometown: Gilroy, Calif.

Relationship status: Single

Her Campus: Tell us about yourself! Do you have any nicknames?John Day: Some people call me “John Day.” It has a nice ring to it, but I usually just prefer “John.”

HC: Got it, John Day. What’s your favorite spot on campus?JD: I’d have to say standing on the ridge above the “P.” The view is really cool any time of day, but especially at night.

HC: Agreed. Are you involved with any groups on campus?JD: I sing bass for both University Singers and Polyphonics. I joined University Singers for fall quarter, and Polyphonics this spring quarter.

HC: You’ll have to serenade the Her Campus girls sometime! What’s been your most memorable moment at Cal Poly so far?JD: My most memorable moment was during Week of Welcome. My group and I went to a concert that was going on in the MAC, and my friend Danny brought up the idea of crowd surfing. I volunteered to try it, and I surfed from the front row all the way around the crowd, and landed back where I started.

HC: That sounds pretty sweet! It’s time to get down to business though: What’s your most embarrassing moment of all time?JD: My most embarrassing moment happened during my sophomore year in high school, when I was riding my bike home from school. I wasn’t paying attention, and I accidentally hit a sprinkler head that was sticking up. I flew over my handlebars and landed face-first into somebody’s lawn. I wasn’t hurt, but the sunglasses I had been wearing broke.

HC: Ouch. Let’s talk about something more cheerful. Who or what inspires you?JD: My mom and my aunt really inspire me. They both immigrated to the United States from Mexico right after graduating high school. Even though they didn’t speak English when they left Mexico, they still managed to learn English, get an education, and make a living for themselves here.

HC: Wow! Sounds like you have some pretty amazing women in your life. While we’re on the topic of females, what’s your best pick up line?JD: I’ve never actually tried it, but … Hey girl, can I take your derivative? Because I wanna lie tangent to your curves.

HC: We see the math major in you coming out. What’s the first thing you notice in a girl?JD: The first thing I notice is her outlook on life. If a girl has a really positive, happy vibe going, getting to know her is more relaxed and comfortable, which makes for a much more natural relationship to build on.

HC: Finish this sentence: Cal Poly girls are the best because…JD: There’s an amazing combination of great personalities, intelligence and good looks at Cal Poly, and an overwhelming number of the girls here have all three. A guy can’t ask for much more.

HC: If you could tell the girls at Cal Poly anything, what would it be?JD: Meeting new people is one of my favorite things about being at Cal Poly this year, even though I’m more quiet than outgoing by nature. If you recognize me on campus somewhere, feel free to say hi and start a conversation!

Nikki is a senior at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, where her parents think she's on track to graduate early with degrees in both Finance and French. She is -- kind of -- but she currently functions under the delusion that graduation, much like the limit, does not actually exist. In wake of this recent quarter-life crisis, Nikki plans to live out her final days as an undergrad nursing her giant ego, making Mean Girls references, and advocating for the continued use of the Oxford comma. She prefers her dog and s'mores Poptarts over most things, and survives on a delicate combination of iced coffee and cookie dough. In her free time, Nikki enjoys binge watching Modern Family, embarrassing herself in front of cute boys, and making empty promises to go to the gym. Hate mail and Mindy Kaling gifs can be tweeted to her anytime at @nikkikontiki.
