How to Stay Fit During Dead Week

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Poly chapter.

It’s the second-to-worst week students dread at the end of each quarter: dead week. And to make matters worse, the name could not be more befitting for how most students feel after the week is over.

With final exams right around the corner, it is very easy to adopt habits you purposely avoid: studying late nights, hibernating in your room or the library, desperately trying to cram all you have procrastinated over the last few weeks. It can really take a toll. Lucky for you, there is a solution to avoid that lifeless feeling you endure after studying your brains out. Exercise.

While some may shriek at the thought of physical activity, it is truly a great remedy for stress relief and may even help your body avoid getting sick! The Recreation Center is a perfect way to stay fit during dead week. Below are ways you can use the Rec to stay sane during this time of despair!

The magical 165,000 square-foot space includes three exercise areas filled with weight and cardio equipment, three fitness studios, an indoor track and a lounge area.

Basically, it’s a pretty big deal.

First, I highly recommend exploring the different machines available. The treadmill is perfect for those who want to really take control of their workout. By setting the incline and speed, you can easily take a leisure walk to get your mind off your chemistry study guide or turn up a few levels to break out into a sweat. It is also perfect to rest up a book or notebook for those daring Mustangs who want to continue their education during their workout.

The elliptical is a machine I use often because it is convenient and more importantly, all the machines have a television attached. What better way to exercise than to watch an episode of reality TV to make you feel a little bit better about yourself? I’m sure Snooki can help you with that one. Also, watching a program while you workout can help you burn more calories!

Aside from the intensive machines, lifting weights is a great way to work on building specific muscles. Don’t be intimidated by the guys who dominate the area. Girl power is key!

Furthermore, the fitness studios facilitate group exercise classes. Take a friend! Try one of numerous classes that are fun and a great workout. I highly recommend yoga for two reasons. First, the immediate stress relief you feel after the class will help you return more refreshed and relaxed to your material. Secondly, actually performing downward dog is far more difficult than you hear it is. And mastering it is a pretty great feeling! An instructor once told me to be “one with the earth.” Let these words of wisdom distract your mind from your studies for a short time.

From the words from the movie The Help, “You is kind, you is strong, you is important!” Don’t forget that as you transition into dead week! Staying fit this week is great for your health and mind.

Treat yourself to exercising. Remember, while eating chocolate temporarily heals your soul, exercising will heal your body. Good luck!
