How to Lose a Guy in 10 Texts

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Poly chapter.

Most dating advice focuses on ways to get a guy to fall for you, but what do you do if you want to lose a guy? Even though How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days just celebrated its 13-year anniversary, the movie still presents us with ample dating advice that just needs to be revamped to fit with the technological reality of today’s society.

Whether you want to avoid doing these things in order to keep your man, or you are just having a really hard time trying to break it off, Andie Anderson has set perfect examples that should make any guy run for the hills.

(Disclaimer: if he sticks around like Ben Barry did after all of this crazy behavior, he’s basically your soulmate.)

Fall in Love

Sometimes you can’t stop yourself from falling for a guy you just met, and it’s not the end of the world if you do. He might even be falling for you too (I mean, you are awesome after all). However, be cautious of revealing your feelings for him too soon…he might not handle couples therapy as respectfully as Ben Barry.

Photoshop Pictures of Your Future Kids

Texting him edited pictures of your future kids that you made from the baby pictures you found on his mom’s Facebook might be enough to have him block your number for good. Bonus points if you post them to social media for the whole world to see instead of just texting them to him.

Make Him Miss His Favorite Game

If your guy is a sports fanatic, he will never want to miss his favorite team’s game. Ben surely wasn’t happy about missing the winning shot while getting Andie a refill, and your guy won’t like a similar situation either.

Ask Him to Buy You Tampons

We have all seen the cute screenshots of boyfriends offering to buy their girlfriends tampons during that time of the month, but, trust us, unless that guy has been your boyfriend for a while, he will react just like Ben did when he saw that Andie had taken over his medicine cabinet.

Turn Everything He Says into an Insult

Even though Andie pulled the “my boyfriend thinks I’m fat” card while eating in a very public place, you can still pull this off via text. He won’t know what hit him if you suddenly start twisting his sweet compliments into insults.

Use Over-the-Top Pet Names

He might be into being called babe or baby right away, but if we learned anything from Andie’s “Princess Sophia” scene, guys won’t necessarily like the over-the-top pet names. Try slipping a few into your next texting conversation and he will definitely be left wondering why you are straying from the usual, cliché names.

Make Everything His Fault

Chances are, if you have made it to this step, he is probably starting to tell you that you are acting crazy. Now is the time to turn it around on him so the break-up can be his fault, not yours.

All hail Andie Anderson, the queen of making break-ups entertaining since 2003!
