How to Accessorize for Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Poly chapter.

Do you often find yourself staring into your closet in frustration, waiting for the perfect outfit to pop out at you? Unfortunately, let’s be real–that never happens. If you want the perfect look, you’ll have to build it by accessorizing! Here are a few ways to jazz up your wardrobe using only a few items.

Handkerchiefs
Handkerchiefs transform every look. You can go from preppy to hippie in a matter of seconds, all depending on the print on the handkerchief. If you’re unsure how to incorporate this difficult little fabric into your wardrobe, remember that you’re the master of your handkerchief. If you’re going for a softer look, keep an eye out for sheer colors, minimal print, and lace. (Go ahead and scoff at the lace, but it’s a great way to optimize negative space and give the illusion of less cloth.) Try out these techniques:

1. Wrap it around your head to keep your hair comfortably held back.
2. Tie it to the handle of your purse to add a whimsical splash of color.
3. Twist it tightly into a long rope. Then tie the “rope” into knots onto any thick, clunky bracelet.

Statement Eyewear
Slide on a pair of statement sunglasses onto any simple outfit and you’ll be a fashion goddess, just like that. You may already own a pair of large circular glasses, but step out of the box with unique frames. As tempting as they may seem, those brown animal print frames won’t exactly cut it this year. Step up your game with quirky glasses, conversation-starter glasses if you will. Also, keep in mind the shape of your face when choosing a pair. Take a change and try out some of these popular shapes:

1. Flowers. Lenses surrounded by sculpted flowers are perfect for anyone starting out with statement glasses but unsure of which direction to take with them. They’re flattering, feminine, and perfect for warm afternoons chilling in the grass. Try to stick to pastel shades of flowers because they’re the easiest on the eyes.
2. Geometric. Try color blocking with hexagonal, triangle, or pointy tear drop frames. Typically, these should be a single color of any intensity. So you can get away with those thick golden frames without a sweat.
3. Glass. Alright, so why would you want more glass around your face when you already have to worry about the ones in directly front of your eyes? I’ll tell you why! Glass reflects light beautifully. Tinted glass reflects light even more beautifully, so pick up a pair of sunglasses with glass temples and temple tips (a.k.a. the long stick that curls behind the ear for support). The thicker the glass, the shinier the reflection.

Over-Sized Clutches
This may seem intimidating for some of us, but over-sized clutches are too fun to pass up. You can be wearing a crisp white tee and plain blue jeans and look perfectly casual. But to take your tee and jean combo up another level? Pair them with the most outlandish, fun over-sized clutch you can find. This summer, let’s turn heads with some impressive bags. Here are some trending designs:

1. Earthy textures and colors, especially wood and preserved flowers. This adds a whole new dimension to boho-chic.
2. Famous paintings. Nothing says artsy like Van Gogh’s Starry Night stretching across your clutch.
3. Iridescence. It’s completely reminiscent of the 90’s, and we love it because it adds the funkiest flare of eye-catching colors to any outfit

Happy accessorizing!
