CC Hannah Joslin, ’17

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Poly chapter.

Meet one of the two CCs of Her Campus Cal Poly… sophomore journalism major Hannah Joslin!

She joined Her Campus halfway through freshman year for reasons most people will understand: to meet people and get involved.

“At first, it was just a way to meet more people in my major and people who liked to write,” Hannah says. “Then, I realized that I do like this kind of writing—magazine writing—because up until then I’d really only done fiction and news pieces.”

When the former CCS stepped down, she says she “went out on a limb” and decided to apply for a position as Editor-in-Chief. Hannah brings a lot of experience to the role: she was EIC of her high school’s newspaper, Center Spread. However, she says there are some big differences between that job and her current one.

“In high school I just threw everyone’s articles into a layout—my entire job was the design end of it,” she says. “There are so many more facets to HC. We have events to plan, recruiting to do, meetings to schedule and make agendas for, social media channels to run, and a goal of becoming known on campus.”

This summer, Hannah helped produce two major music videos.

“I was taking a cinematography clas at the community college in my hometown, Santa Clarita,” she explains. “During one of the classes, someone from a music video shoot came in and asked for volunteers to intern at the shoot—unpaid, of course. I showed up and they basically gave me miscellaneous things to do. It was awesome because I was helping with camera work, I was in charge of the fog machines, I did playback for them, and I got to kind of hang out with the band, Make Out Monday.”

For those of you who are Adventure Time fans, one of the members of Make Out Monday is Jeremy Shada, who plays Finn the Human.

“The AD—the assistant director—of that shoot kept in touch with me and invited me back for another shoot later in the summer,” Hannah says. “That shoot was in Simi Valley, it was—I can’t really talk that much about it, because it hasn’t been released yet—but it’s a tribute to troops song.”

She’s had a lot of exposure to the industry through her mother, who is the production supervisor for Dr. Phil and The Doctors. Hannah was able to sit in the control room while they were taping and talk to directors, sound editors, and interns to learn more about production. That’s what made her want to go into broadcast journalism.

Rapid-Fire Question Time:

If I was any Starbucks drink, I’d be… The mocha cookie crumble frappe with an added shot of expresso, because it has chocolate with cream, and caffeine is important.

When I’m not working on school or HC, I’m… Watching movies that I’ve seen before. Les Miserables, practically anything Disney.

My pet peeves are… People who complain about their parents or their family for doing something embarassing or stupid, because I personally love when that happens. My mom embarrasses me in public, but it’s the best thing ever when she does.

And as a liberal arts major, it really gets on my nerves when people at school or even adults that ask me about going to Cal Poly assume that I don’t work as hard as say, an aerospace engineer.

My dream date is… Bringing junk food and a ton of blankets and pillows to a drive-in movie theatre for a double showing of classic Disney movies.

Something I wear an obnoxious amount is… I have a burgundy v-neck t-shirt that I think I wore three or four times since the start of school. I know I wore it twice this week. Okay, four to five times in the last three weeks of school.

My advice to freshman is… Start conversations with people that you don’t know, even if they don’t look like people that would be the type you’d have in your friend group. And wave to people in the dorms when you walk by. Just wave to everyone!

Something people don’t understand about me at first is… People don’t usually understand my sense of humor when we first meet, but I’m lucky that my few really close friends have similar senses of humor, so we get along really well with our 24/7 inside jokes and bad puns.

For staying active I like to… I love to run, but I mix it with yoga at the Rec and Pilates on my own.

My favorite yoga class at the Rec is… Vinyasa yoga with Amy. Thursdays nights at 6:40. Be there.

If you want to get to know the awesome Joslin better—trust me, you do—then we’ll see you at the Rec on Thursdays.
