7 Reasons We’ll Miss Having Michelle Obama as the First Lady

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Poly chapter.

Growing up as a woman, we are constantly told who we’re supposed to be. We are told certain ways to dress, to talk and to act. It’s confusing trying to figure out who you are when everyone has an opinion about who you should be.

But we have the best role model imaginable: Michelle Obama. Going through our high school and college years getting to watch her has been the ultimate treat. Here are just a few of the things we’ll miss when she moves her perfect wardrobe out of the White House:

1:  Her epic dancing. From rocking the stage at the Easter Egg Roll to breakin’ it down with Ellen, there’s no doubt about it: FLOTUS has serious moves.

2: The way she constantly empowers other women. We are often told that in order to be successful we need to compete with each other. But the First Lady understands something that we here at Her Campus hold very dear: there is room at the top for all of us. “When you’ve worked hard, and done well, and walked through that doorway of opportunity, you do not slam it shut behind you. You reach it back.”

3: Her killer style. As First Lady, she is constantly under the media microscope. Many people would have allowed that to limit their fashion, but Michelle just used it to show off her impeccable taste. Always classy and bright, she’s permanently atop our best dressed list.

4: Her commitment to health. A major initiative of the First Lady’s has been Let’s Move. The campaign is centered around teaching children healthy food and fitness early on, so they can grow into a generation free of obesity. One of her first actions moving into the White House was to plant a kitchen garden, and she has been leading important conversations around nutrition ever since.

5: Listening to President Obama talk about her. And seeing him look at her. Well, pretty much everything about the two of them. It’s clear that this power couple admire each other so much, and keeping affection like that through eight years in the White House is an impressive feat. He once listed being married to Michelle as the number one most popular thing he’s done as president. I mean, talk about #relationshipgoals.

6: Her personal frugality. Described by CNN as financially “boring” and “steady,” the Obamas are not ones to spend lavishly. They paid for all White House residence renovations out of their own funds, and Michelle has frequently been seen in outfits from budget shops like H&M and Gap.

7: Her willingness to be silly. Five words: The Evolution of Mom Dancing.

We can’t wait to see what she’ll do next.
