5 Cheap Dates for Broke College Kids

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal Poly chapter.

Let’s face it, dating in college is hard. Having time to actually go on dates is difficult in its own right, but having the money for dates is just as difficult. However, just because you don’t have money doesn’t mean that you and your boo shouldn’t do something together every now and then. For this reason, we’ve compiled a list of cute date ideas that won’t break the bank!

1. Picnic on the beach…bonus points if it’s at sunset!

Let’s face it, beach = amazing. Especially here in sunny San Luis Obispo where you can hang-out and picnic at the beautiful Pismo and Avila beaches! A few sandwiches, some fruit, and yummy drinks will make for a super cute, super cost-effective date for you and your boo! Plus, you can watch the sunset together, and nothing beats watching the sunset on the beach.

2. Sleepover dates…bonus points if it’s in the winter.

Maybe you and your partner aren’t in the “sleeping over” stage yet. That’s perfectly okay! However, if you and your s/o are used to spending the night at each other’s places, nothing makes a comfier date than slipping into some warm PJ’s, drinking hot cocoa, and talking about life with each other. It’s cute, it’s comfy, and there’s the potential for a little bit of ~bedroom action~ if the date goes particularly well. (Again, if you and your babe aren’t at the sleeping together stage just yet, the cuddles and falling asleep together part of this date are just as amazing!)

3. Stay-at-home movie dates…bonus points if you watch scary movies that make you cuddle your boo for safety.

Movie date-nights are a perfect way to relax with your boo. You save money by not going out to the movie theater but still find a way to have fun and spend time together. So put on the Netflix, pop some popcorn, and cuddle up with your boo.

4. Nap dates are bomb af.

We’re college kids. Napping is in our nature. While napping by yourself is great, napping with your beau is even better, especially if you can cuddle up super close to them and use them as a human blanket. Seriously, you cannot go wrong with a naptime date. Plus, there’s no money required! Just throw on some comfy clothes, (or not! ;) ) and get your nap on! Studies show that sleeping with your s/o as a whole range of benefits as well. Talk about killing two birds with one stone, ya feel?

5. Order takeout, but decorate your house to look like a fancy restaurant…bonus points if you dress up fancy too!

Maybe you and your babe are itching to go out for a fancy dinner but can’t afford the fancy prices. Borrow some elegant dishes from your parents, swing by Trader Joes for your favorite cheap wine, and order some bomb takeout. Wa-lah! You’ve got yourself a special date without the insane prices! Dressing up in your old prom attire can enhance the mood and make you really feel like you’re at a nice restaurant. It’s the perfect way to get the ~fancy dinner vibe~ without the fancy dinner price.

Dating in college can be tough, especially when you have no money. However, just because you and your boo lack moolah doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy each other’s company or have a special date. Find what works for you, and treat yourself to a lovely evening with your loved one!
