It’s that time of year again: International Women’s Day! On March 8, we have the opportunity to celebrate women and all that we’ve achieved socially, economically, politically, and culturally. This year the theme for International Women’s Day is “Time is Now: Rural and urban activists transforming women’s lives.” After the events that have occurred in the past year, with the spotlight shining on sexual harassment, violence, and discrimination against women, specifically in the workplace, this day is even more important. Her Campus at Cal Lutheran is hosting an International Women’s Day event on the Spine on March 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Please take the time to come out and take a look at the different clubs and organizations that will be present!

For those of you who are getting close to entering the job market (seniors I’m talking to you) Career Services has a great table for you! They will be talking about how to negotiate for a better salary. As we all know, there is a gender wage gap and this gap needs to be closed. According to Business Insider, women make $10,800 less than men per year. Is it terribly unfair that we have to learn how to negotiate for a better salary to get the same amount as a man? Yes, but we can use this resource and take the step to close that gap and fight for our salary!Photo courtesy of Her Campus at Cal Lutheran

Also paying off student loans can be so much easier if we actually have the salary we deserve.

Additionally, take the time to learn about a different culture and the important women within that culture. Muslim Student Alliance will be talking about Women in Islam. The Latin American Student Organization (LASO) will be having a matching game at their table called “Leading Latina Ladies.” This matching game will educate people on the important women within their culture; you can match the bio of a Latina to a picture on their board. These will include well-known Latinas and other lesser known Latinas as well and all of them will be in the music industry, acting industry, writers, and artists. Green Club will be discussing fair trade and the female workers throughout the world who work to earn fair wages for their craft work and food production. Their booth will be showing some companies and product brands of artisan craft work and different foods that support these women.

Counseling and Psychological Services, CAPS, will have jewelry making and other activities that promote women empowerment.Photo courtesy of Her Campus at Cal Lutheran

Interested in hearing what your fellow students have to say? International Student Services and Multicultural Programs will be hosting an open mic reading.

Who doesn’t love hearing about women who are kicking butt and taking names? Stop by the Wrestling Club’s table, they’ll be talking about women in wrestling.Photo courtesy of Her Campus at Cal Lutheran

And just to brighten your day a little more, Hillel will be passing out flowers and iCLU Radio will be playing music designed to empower females around the world! In addition, you have the opportunity to write a message in honor of women, which will be read live, on-air by one of our own iCLU Radio DJs!

These are only some of the organizations and activities that will be present! Make sure you stop by and come join the celebration of women!
