The 57th Annual Grammy Awards: Wrap Up

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at C Mich chapter.

The 57th Annual Grammy Awards graced us with the best in music last night; with a special twist during some of the evening’s best performances. The award show known as the “biggest night in music” paid great respects to the artists we love and loved (and now, realize we always will).

The evening began when LL Cool J welcomed the television broadcast LIVE on CBS from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

One of the most anticipated events of the Grammy’s is the first performance to take the stage — for 2015, that performance was from AC/DC. The often known as “pioneers of heavy metal” band performed a medley of “Rock or Bust” and “Highway to Hell” – no matter how old you are we are sure that you sang along just for a moment.

Of course, leave it to The Grammy’s to continuously surprise the crowd with SEVERAL musical legends. Other incredible performances included Tom Jones (singer of “It’s not Unusual”—trust us and give it a listen) and Jessie J performed a rendition of “You’ve Lost Lovin’ that Way.” Talk about powerful voices from then and now!

Another collaborative performance that had the crowd out of their seats was that of Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett. The duo makes for an outstanding team and recently released an entire album together, “Cheek to Cheek.” There were several powerful duos last night and Bennett and Gaga’s success makes us wonder if they inspired The Grammy’s!

The inspiration did not stop there—Prince took the stage to announce Album of the Year (won by Beck) and the crowd went wild. We can only imagine what it would be like to be in the presence of the Prince—we are sure even Queen B bowed down.

Although all music royalty will always love and respect Prince. it is time to bow down to Sam Smith. The pop vocalist took home 4 of the 6 Grammy Awards that he was nominated for. “I’m having a good night,” he laughed along with the crowd after he was awarded Song of the Year.

Sam Smith got a chuckle out of the crowd, however, the funniest moment of the evening? Kristen Wiig’s dancing debut during Sia’s performance. WHAT?! *Insert crying laughing emoji here* We aren’t kidding. (Proof from Billboard.com below.)

Last night’s show was filled with laughter and tears—it was an emotional rollercoaster, to say the least. Katy Perry delivered a moving performance of “By the Grace of God” as she stood beside a victim of domestic abuse and the crowd was wiping away their tears by the end.

Other emotional moments included performances with Paul McCartney who performed ‘FourFiveSeconds’ with Kanye West and Rihanna and a performance and appearance by the one and only Stevie Wonder — he presented the Record of the Year to none other than Sam Smith.

And there was no better way to end a night of musical achievements and appreciation than with an epic performance from Common, Beyonce, and John Legend. Bey did not show off her curves or scandalous moves, but instead, the trio gave us all goosebumps with their voices and a choir behind them. We are still trying to wrap our heads around such a magical musical moment.

We hope you had the chance to tune into The Grammy’s. and if not we hope our wrap-up gave you an idea of what the 57th greatest night in music was all about.

A special shout out to two former Central Michigan University students who were at The Grammy’s last night. Madeline Zeppa who helped CBS with the production of The Grammy’s and Kaitlyn Horton who was a part of a short segment on E! during the Red Carpet Show. Fire Up in L.A.!

Until next year everyone!
