7 Ways to Stay Cool in Charleston

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at C of C chapter.

It’s springtime in Charleston and we’ve already gotten a hint of the hot weather that’s to come. If you’ve been in Charleston in the Spring and Summer before, you already know how unbearable the humid heat can get. Rather than locking yourself inside with air conditioning and missing the beautiful days in Charleston, take some of these hints to avoid overheating.

1. Get a fan.

Using a small fan is a good way to stay cool without turning up the AC. Whether you use an electric or a battery powered one, it will make a huge difference when you need some cold air blowing in your face. You can buy a cheap one made for college dorms at stores like Target or Bed, Bath, and Beyond.

2. Wear light, breathable clothing

Charleston doesn’t just get hot; it gets humid. Which means you’ll feel like you’re covered in sweat all day. It’s even worse if you wear heavy clothes that will stick to you. Dressing weather appropriately gets a whole new meaning in the Charleston heat.

3. Go to the Beach

The beach is a great place to spend a hot day. There are three beaches close to CofC’s campus: Folly Beach, Sullivan’s Island, and Isle of Palms. Some areas of these beaches get much more crowded than others, so just plan for the kind of beach day you want to have: fun or relaxing.

4. Stay hydrated

Always keep water handy. When it gets so hot, staying hydrated becomes more crucial than ever. It may be worth it to invest in an insulated water bottle that will keep your water cold while you’re out. Because there’s nothing worse than wanting a cold refreshing drink of water, only to discover the sun has made your water bottle as hot as you are.

5. Have a Popsicle

Another way to stay refreshed in the heat is to keep some popsicles in the freezer. Whether you get your favorite store-bought brand or make your own with fresh ingredients is up to you. But you won’t feel more like a kid again than when eating a popsicle to stay cool!

6. Visit Waterfront Park

Waterfront park is a great place to go when it gets hot outside because there are many things to do to stay cool. You can sit on one of the swings enjoying the breeze, sit at the end of the pier catching glimpses of the dolphins, or get your feet wet in the fountains. Yup! If you didn’t already know, you can actually get into the two fountains at Waterfront Park (as long as it’s warm enough)!

7. Get some ice cream, froyo, or gelato

There’s no shortage of places in Charleston to get a frozen sweet treat, Ben & Jerry’s and Belgian Gelato just to name two. No matter what street you’re on, you’ll probably find at least one place to satisfy your craving.
