The Oscars through the Eyes of a 19-year-old College Girl

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Buffalo chapter.

Pretty people in pretty dresses…

Obviously, the red carpet before the real show is watched from your dinner table with little glances of the reporters acting awkward as ever. Nothing special other than the actresses and actors introducing their spouses/partners, and the occasional brother who graciously came along and has to stand there smiling as their ever so famous sibling talks up the latest movie they starred in.

Jimmy Kimmel respectfully and comically calls out the diversity at this year’s Oscars compared to last year’s by saying, “Black people saved NASA, and white people saved jazz, that’s at least some progress, right?” referring to Hidden Figures and La La Land. He also mentions how great The Oscar’s will be by saying the ladies didn’t tape their dresses to their boobs for nothing. (So freaking relatable, as Kimmel said this I had flashbacks to prom, sorority semi-formals, UB’s gala, and every night out I wore an unstable yet adorable bodysuit with hopes my double-sided tape would actually work)

Lin-Manuel-Miranda and the girl from Moana (Auli’i Cravalho) sang for a hot sec which was cute but her voice was not the best, but then again this is the Oscars… not the Grammys.

Candy. Literally. Fell. From. The. Ceiling. Why aren’t I famous, dressed to the nines, and at the Oscars catching candy from a parachute?? Lmk

There was an awesome monologue/shout out to Jackie Chan (master of all movie stunts known worldwide), and Seth Rogen and Michel J. Fox walked out of a DeLorean on stage (#BackToTheFuture) while wearing future shoes. Cool af.

Also, Jimmy Kimmel held up the adorable Sunny Pawar and recreated the famous scene from The Lion King as more candy, cookies, and doughnuts fell from the ceiling.

Kimmel also tweeted Trump some funny stuff (how could he not), I advise you check it out. Lastly John Legend sings a La La Land song. Sweet and simple, his performances are always and without a doubt absolutely lovely. Bravo John.

There was also a weird few minutes where regular people on a Hollywood tour in sweatshirts and selfie sticks were surprised and walked in then casually met some celebrities. Honestly I would do the same thing as them, and look amazed beyond words while trying to snapchat the entire thing.

As far as fashion goes, I could write a 2,000-page essay on everyone’s outfits, good and bad, but to keep this within everyone’s attention span I’ll only mention one. Janelle Monae. Elegant, gorgeous, sexy, and best of all, SPARKLY. Get it girl, you rock.

Apparently, another Steve Harvey accident happened, they announced La La Land as Best Picture then after several people said their acceptance speeches, it was CORRECTED that Moonlight had one. Very awkward, very weird. Stuff happens.

All in all, this year’s 89th annual Oscars was inclusive, diverse, entertaining, and cute as hell.

And for my favorite anonymous quote of the star-studded night, “Movies are a perpetual epiphany”. This basically gives me an excuse to make my Netflix binge-watching hours seem the littlest bit enlightening. Now go grab some popcorn and catch up on some great movies, because this year’s Oscars dished out some pretty great winners.
