Why Our Moms Are Better Than Our Boyfriends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bucknell chapter.

Let’s just state what we already know: boys suck. When we want to shop with them, they lurk in the corner of the store. When we want to watch The Notebook a million times over, they change the channel. When we express our excitement that Prince Harry is now single, they get jealous and irrationally mad… the list goes on and on.

And for those reasons, Moms are exponentially better than boyfriends. Mother’s Day is coming up, and it’s time to celebrate the one person on this earth who waited up for you when you were out with friends (even when you came home waaay past your curfew), complained about the same reality TV stars with you, and put up with you through your tragic middle school phase.

As opposed to when a boy asks you out on a date, mother-daughter dates are carefree and – dare I say it? – fun. You don’t have to spend hours primping, blow-drying, shaving, and putting on make up. When you’re with your mom, who cares what you look like? You don’t have to look pretty, and you can eat unhealthy amounts of food around her. Not to mention that she will usually cook it for you. If you go out to dinner, she encourages you to bring friends, whom she will gladly pay for because she wants everyone to be happy. Better yet, you don’t even have to worry about your friends approving of her.

When it comes to Moms, sleepovers have a different connotation. You guys can gossip about the latest Kardashian drama, share clothes/shoes/accessories, and watch Gilmore Girls (okay, just one more time). Overall, you have some unusually underrated and enjoyable nights when you stay in.

You realize that your Mom will never cheat on you like a past ex-boyfriend. God forbid you double-text a boy that you like in the span of five minutes, you know you’ll be categorized as psychotic. But you know that if you text your Mom twenty times in a row, she will take the time to respond to every single text.

Your Mom is the first one you call when you aced an exam or if you need to know how to properly do your laundry. After watching The Oscars, you realize that if you were a glamorous celebrity, you would hands down ask your Mom to be your date (psh, would you really want your boyfriend to be there when your Mom could point out who will definitely be on Fashion Police the next day?). Your Mom can cheer you up, no matter what the consequences are. Your entire life, she’s somehow been your friend, costume designer, doctor, project organizer, cheerleader, therapist, coach, hair stylist, and personal chauffeur. Mom, to put it simply, I love you so much that those three words seem inadequate.
