What Your Favorite Thanksgiving Side Dish Says About You

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bucknell chapter.

When we hear the word “Thanksgiving,” there’s typically one thing that comes to mind: the turkey. We imagine it sitting at the center of the table, basking in all of its golden, fresh-out-of-the-oven glory.

However, anyone who’s ever partaken in a true Thanksgiving feast would know that there is way more to Thanksgiving than turkey. As a matter of fact, the side dishes are the true stars of the show. Side dishes bring Thanksgiving dinner to life by giving the meal some personality. Each individual dish boasts a unique flavor that is completely its own, making it easy to have a favorite.

Keep reading to find out what your favorite Thanksgiving side dish says about you. As the saying goes, you are what you eat!

Mashed Potatoes: Miss Popular

Everyone loves mashed potatoes. They’re fluffy, they’re creamy, and they pair beautifully with everything. What’s not to like? You’re probably used to people fawning over you all the time – even the pickiest of eaters – but they’re perfectly justified in doing so. You’re simply that wonderful. Sometimes your likeability can take a toll on your own well-being – people usually come back to you for seconds, thirds, fourths – but you don’t mind giving the people what they want. Like Gretchen Wieners, you can’t help it that you’re popular.

Sweet Potato Casserole: The Trailblazer

You’re unafraid of the unconventional – the combination of the already-sweet sweet potato with the borderline saccharine marshmallow speaks for itself. As the black sheep of the family, you aren’t as popular as your distant cousin, wholesome little mashed potatoes. Relatives tend to avoid initiating conversation with you at the dinner table. To be honest, they’re kind of scared of you. But this doesn’t faze you; you march to the beat of your own drum, regardless of what other people think. Keep doing you!

Cranberry Sauce: The Sass-Master

You’re somewhat sweet, but a whole lot of tangy. On the surface, you’re deceptively innocent. However, once people get to know you, they realize that you’re more than the turkey’s trusty dusty sidekick. You’re a force to be reckoned with. Your sass is unparalleled, and people love that about you. Without you, life would be incredibly dull, but more importantly, turkey meat would be unbearably bland.

Green Bean Casserole: The Cinderella

Sophistication is your middle name. With your layers of silky cream of mushroom soup and ever-so-stylish fried onion garnish, you elevate the unassuming green bean to a whole new level. You’re so impeccably dressed that people forget you came from a can, and you love to showcase your creative talents by putting the “extra” in extraordinary. You’re driven and ambitious, but you never forget to remember your humble beginnings.

Stuffing: The Teddy Bear

You’re an embodiment of all things warm and fuzzy. You’re the epitome of comfort food. You’re sunshine and mittens and hugs and baby kittens all condensed into one culminating, carb-tastic dish. Stuffing is one of those things that simply makes you feel good on the inside. You have an addictive personality; people feed off of your positive energy. You may not be the most aesthetically pleasing dish on the table, but you’re proof that it’s the stuff(ing) on the inside that counts.

Here’s to hoping that your favorite side dish makes an appearance at your upcoming Thanksgiving dinner. Happy Thanksgiving!
