What You Need to Know About Celebrity Athleisure Lines

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bucknell chapter.

What is it about celebrities and their athleisure fashion lines? Are all these different brands created equal? If I buy a bodysuit from Beyoncé’s IVY PARK line, will I be just like Bey?

If you thought athleisure clothing was a fad, like the Juicy jumpsuit or the Von Dutch trucker hat, think again. Merriam-Webster has officially included “athleisure” into its dictionary. This is not only a huge win for those of us who rock leggings and sneakers more than we do jeans and nice shoes, but it must also be making the myriad of Hollywood stars with athleisure fashion lines pretty happy too.

The list of famous people with either their own brand of clothing or sportswear designer partnerships has been growing since 2010. Among some of the big names you’ll see who have now added fashion designer to their already lauded resumes are Kate Hudson, Carrie Underwood, Rihanna, and as of April 21st, Queen Bey herself.

In the hopes of bringing you fashion inspiration and happy shopping, here’s what you need to know about some of these athleisure lines currently on the market. (note to self: not all celebrity fashion lines are the same).

Kate Hudson’s FABLETICS

Fabletics is a great option for gym-goers who not only want to look cool but also wear clothing that is actually built for performance and sweat.  With a variety of styles that can fit diverse body types and those with different styles, there is sure to be something for every athlete, whether he/she’s into yoga, spinning, or just looking for something comfortable to rock while doing errands. The only negative I find with Fabletics is their VIP program. While shoppers can choose to buy outfits or individual pieces without a membership, there is an interesting catch. You can either check out as a guest and pay full-price for each item, or you can join the VIP membership, get discounts on purchases, and receive outfits every month. But here’s the catch: if you’re a VIP member, you pay every month, unless you remember to “skip” a delivery. As the website states: “if you don’t shop or “Skip the Month” by the 5th, your credit card will be charged $49.95 on the 6th until you cancel. That charge can be used as a credit to spend or save.” Better not forget to “skip” before your card is charged!

Rihanna’s FENTY x Puma Collection

If you’re trying to work work work workout and look cool at the same time, you’ll be looking cooler than you are actually breaking a sweat. These clothes are not meant for the gym! Rihanna’s partnership with Puma is more of a lifestyle sportswear line than it is a about fashionable fitness wear. Her clothing is not colorful or youthful, but rather a mix of black sheer tops, furs, and extreme fitting outfits (either very body conscious or very loose-fitting). However if you’re looking for $80 pink fur sandals and $180 extraterrestrial, astronaut-looking sneakers, you’ll have to wait, because they are already sold out. Released on April 22nd 2016, Rihanna’s FENTY footwear is already out of stock and taking names. Oh RiRi…

Carrie Underwood’s CALIA

If you’re a nice girl looking for not overly designed, not high-intensity performance gear, Underwood’s CALIA line is going to be great athleisure for you. With a range of pricing, offering clothing from $30-$105, women can look like the cute girl next store while also being a badass yogi. As USA Today writes in a quick review of the brand, “Underwood’s wicking fabrics, floral patterns and thoughtfully-placed pockets aren’t the edgiest, but that’s not what you’d want from the Southern belle. Instead, they’re classic, feminine clothes ready to be worn with coffee, hours before engaging in any sort of exercise.”

Beyoncé’s IVY PARK

Teaming up with TopShop founder and billionaire Philip Green, Queen B has done it again. Though reviewers of IVY PARK have noted that there are some minor sizing issues – for instance, one’s usual size doesn’t always line up with IVY PARK pieces – Beynoncé’s line appears to be both function-oriented and fashionable. While the average gym-goer might not gravitate to the $175 long sleeve color block bodysuit, she might find something more up her alley in a capri legging for $52. Taking the female body and its different shapes in mind, IVY PARK not only has three different fits of leggings, but it also utilizes “advanced fabrics that serve to enhance curves and provide additional support to avoid reverb while exercising” (USA Today). So, if you’re the kind of person who wants to look and play like Bey, IVY PARK will definitely have something to offer.
