What It Means to be a Fall Girl

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bucknell chapter.

Recently, one of my guy friends said to me, “You’re a Fall Girl, aren’t you?” Caught off guard, I replied with a confused “What do you mean?!” He then explained, “Well, your sweater game is on point right now,” referring to my bright pink, super cozy ensemble. Thanks for noticing, dude.

Since then, I’ve thought about what it means to be a “Fall Girl”. As silly as it sounds, there are marked differences between the girl described in LFO’s June 1999 hit “Summer Girls,” who like to wear Abercrombie & Fitch, and a Fall Girl. Read on:

  1. Fall Girls love to layer. Sweaters, scarves, jackets…oh my! A Fall Girl loves her layers. She enjoys all the cozy comforts of dressing for colder months, excited to see the days of wearing shorts and skirts disappear like mild sunburn.
  2. When you say pumpkin, Fall Girls jump. Pumpkin spice lattes. Pumpkin biscotti. Pumpkin Munchkins. Pumpkin cookies. Pumpkin squash soup from Panera. Pumpkin everything…a Fall Girl doesn’t discriminate.
  3. Fall Girls have a special appreciation for foliage. A Fall Girl never fails to capture the essence of autumn’s changing leaves…through their iPhone lens and with an Instagram filter, of course.
  4. When its summer, Fall Girls buy wool sweaters. Look in a Fall Girls’ closet and you’ll see stacks on stacks of sweaters. Most were purchased during summer’s boiling hot months, in hopes that crisp September mornings would just come sooner already.
  5. For Fall Girls, Apple Orchards > Beaches. Fall Girls wait all year to frolic through local orchards with their friends, an annual tradition that warrants the perfect flannel-blue jeans-riding boots ensemble. Who needs sand in your toes when you’ve got ripe apples to pick?
  6. Fall Girls like it hot…tea and coffee, that is. Chilled coffee? Iced tea? Fall Girls forgo the cubes in favor of savoring the warm comforts of dark roast (with a shot of pumpkin syrup) or a Chai tea latte…mmmm.
  7. Fall Girls are always DTC (Down To Cuddle). When the weather gets colder, a Fall Girl turns to her best friends: a fuzzy blanket and Netflix. Not moving from her bed, she considers it an afternoon (turned into an evening…) well spent.
  8. Fall Girls shed a tear when winter arrives. Say it ain’t so! When the last golden leaf falls off the tree, Fall Girls everywhere mourn the end of their favorite season. Now, they only reminisce on the days spent baking apple pies, jumping in piles of crunchy leaves, and the days where down puffer coats weren’t necessary.

If you’re a Fall Girl at heart, you’re picking up what I’m putting down here. If summer’s always on your mind, or spring’s your favorite time of year, then maybe it’s tough to fully understand how a Fall Girl feels. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t delight in all of autumn’s pleasures. So get off the couch, go pick an apple, sip a Pumpkin-flavored something from 7th Street, and breathe in the crisp air…cause as hard as it is to admit, it’s not gonna last forever, ladies.
