What Does Your Phone Case Say About You?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bucknell chapter.

In a world where our phones are pretty much considered the equivalent to lifelines (if you didn’t like your best friend’s insta of her food…did she really eat?!), the next most important decision after choosing what type of phone is fit to hold your life in it is what type of case should protect it. With all the different types of phone cases available, though, your choice of case says more about you than you may realize:

The Life-Proof Case: You mean business. Carrying your precious phone in a case designed to protect it from the elements shows that you’re so serious about staying connected that the treat of water damage or dropping your phone is far too great to risk. So what if it takes you twenty minutes to take the thing apart in order to plug your phone into the auxiliary in your car?  You’re not willing to risk your phone getting being damaged and ending up in less than perfect condition anytime soon.

The Card-Holding Case: This is practicality at its finest: keeping your student ID and/or credit cards in the back of your phone means you value functionality over all else. These cases are available in several different patterns or styles (Lily Pulitzer makes them, or you can find card-holders for your phone at Dwellings, too) so you don’t have to sacrifice style for functionality. Your case says that you’re more concerned about practicality more than anything else, but you don’t sacrifice style for it either.

The Bedazzled Case: While tons of rhinestones and other decorative parts may not be the most practical for protecting your screen from shattering, if you opt for this type of case, it’s obvious that you’re out to make more of a fashion statement than actually providing protection for your phone. That being said, if you’re the type to risk a cracked screen for your phone case, you’re probably out to make a statement, too. While a bedazzled case may scream “high maintenance,” at least the back half of your phone will look pretty when your case fails you after you accidentally drop your phone on the sidewalk on Saturday night.

The Phone Case That Identifies You: If your phone case boasts your sorority letters, initials/monogram, or a brand name or logo, or any other words or symbols that help identify or define you, you’re guilty of having a “case that identifies you.” The irony of this kind of phone case lies in the fact that further identifying yourself with a message on your phone case does make you slightly typical…but don’t worry—your phone still wears your sorority letters or initials well, just know that the rest of us are aware of the extra thought you put in choosing what about yourself was worth putting on your phone for the world to see. This kind of case showcases you priorities maybe even more than you realize by letting everyone else see what you think is most important that they know about you.
