Surviving the Cold: The Best Beauty and Fashion Tips

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bucknell chapter.

It’s that time of year again: the leaves have fallen, your skin is as dry as the chicken in the caf, and the walk uphill has never felt longer. Yes, that’s right, it’s COLD! But, as we embark on the next five months in the central PA tundra, we must remember the arguably best food of the year (Cafsgiving, anyone?), jolly holiday songs, and peppermint mochas that late fall and winter bring along as well! So, to help ease the bite of winter and hopefully enhance the joy that the holiday season brings, Her Campus Bucknell has compiled several beauty and fashion tips to help us feel and look our best from November to February:

Beauty tips for…

…dry skin

If you struggle with dry, flaky skin in the winter (or even year round), then this little beauty should be at the top of your winter skin care routine. Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream is super moisturizing, while still being lightweight and not adding oil to your T-zone. You can put this on after you wash your face in the morning and at night, and it can be worn alone, or under your face makeup if you choose to wear any. …brittle hair

There is nothing worse than trying to put your hair in a ponytail when the weather has made your hair so dry that your fingers literally get caught in it. Fortunately, Argan Oil is a cheap and easy fix for those brittle ends! OGX Moroccan Argan Oil can be put in wet or dry hair to add moisture and shine; just make sure to use this product sparingly so your hair doesn’t look greasy.

…foundation that flakes off

For this beauty buzzkill, we have a “splurge” option and a budget-friendly option. Both have very good reputations for being moisturizing foundations that last a long time, and they won’t go patchy or flake off on dry spots. So if you’re in the market for a new winter foundation and looking to spend anywhere from $13- $42, look no further!

Fashion tips for…

…a chilly walk to class

How does a collegiette survive her uphill trek to Academic West without sweating through her parka upon arrival? Layers. We promise it won’t kill you not to throw on the chunky turtleneck sweater you just got in the mail; a lighter shirt, open cardigan, and vest will be much easier to take off and on as you tackle the strange 40 degrees outside/80 degrees inside situation. Feel free to add a cute scarf and boots if it’s extra cold in the morning!

…staying comfy as temperatures fall

Not ready to give up your leggings yet? Three words, friends: fleece. lined. leggings. No other explanation is needed – other than bless whoever invented these. Check out Merona’s classic and faux-fur lined versions for optimal coziness.

…cold ears that need extra warmth

For chilly days when your ears need a little extra TLC, there are multiple ways to retain warmth and fashion simultaneously! For a casual vibe full of school spirit, try a Bucknell pom pom beanie, which will keep you warm and decked out in orange and blue all season long!

Afraid your winter hat will clash with your outfit, and you’ll have to forgo warmth if you want to dress up a little more? Try a neutral colored cable knit ear warmer headband that will match with anything, but also keep your ears toasty warm!

Now go outside and tell the cold who’s boss!

Lily is a first- year student at Bucknell University, from Baltimore, MD. She is the youngest of three children, with two older brothers who live in New York and Boston. She has two dogs, Cooper and Nellie, and if you meet her in person she has probably already shown you the thousands of pictures she has of them on her phone. Lily loves to sing and play guitar, is passionate about fashion and beauty, and is so excited to be a HerCampus writer for Bucknell!
