John Dingell, the Longest-Serving Member of Congress, Retires

Mr. John Dingell, a Democratic representative from Michigan, served in the house for about 60 years and will now retire. He made the announcement on Monday, February 24 that he would not be seeking re-election into the House. Dingell started his term in 1955, meaning that he has been in the House during 11 different presidencies including Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, both Bush’s, Clinton and Obama.

Mr. Dingell did not go out silently, as he blamed partisan tensions and slow progression as his reasons for retirement. During an interview with The Detroit News, Mr. Dingell’s anger was tangible. “I find serving in the House to be obnoxious,” he said, explaining the hostile climate both inside and outside Congress. President Obama released a statement praising Dingell, calling him “one of the most influential legislators of all time.” Obama noted his “tireless fight to guarantee quality, affordable health care for every American.”

I think Mr. Dingell was a great representative for Michigan and worked extremely hard for his district. I specifically admired his pursuit of health care changes and his staunch support of gun control, helping to push legislation along in Congress. Mr. Dingell’s retirement saddens me that he went out with such a sour opinion of the House. However I think that it was probably his time to go. Although he was an extremely respectable legislator and representative, I think it is hard for Mr. Dingell, an 87-year-old man, to correctly reflect the ideas of the current Democratic Party and the values of younger demographics. I am excited to see who will replace this legendary representative, with hopes that he or she will be a younger and more progressive individual.

Pennsylvania “Craigslist Killer” Claims to Kill more than 20 People Across the US

Miranda Barbour, 19-year-old Pennsylvania newlywed, was charged with murder after meeting a man on Craigslist and then stabbing him to death with her husbands help. She claimed that she has killed more than 20 people as a part of her involvement in a Satanic Cult. “When I hit 22, I stopped counting,” Barbour told The Daily Item, a Sunbury-based newspaper, in a chilling interview. She claims that she can pinpoint on a map where each body is, boasting that she replays each murder in her head like watching a movie.

Barbour and her husband, Elytte, are both facing the death penalty for the murder of the Craigslist man. Officials are calling the homicide a “thrill kill” that marked the couple’s three-week wedding anniversary. It was reported that Elytte Barbour hid beneath a blanket in the backseat and wrapped a cord around the victim’s neck, trying to choke and strangle the Craigslist man. Miranda then stabbed the victim over 20 times. The body was found in an alley the next day.

Many people, including authority figures, are questioning the validity of Miranda’s mass murder claims. If she did actually pull off all those kills, she would be marked as one of the most high-profile serial killers of all time. I think it’s hard to believe that she actually killed all those people, as serial killers are known to be brilliant and certainly wouldn’t dump a body in an alley leading to their own arrest. FBI officials are investigating the case to see if they can actually retrieve any of the bodies and confirm Barbour’s claims. In the meantime, this sick couple is still facing the death penalty for their tag-team murder of 42-year-old Craigslist victim, Troy LaFerrara—a well-deserved sentence.
