Recycling Trends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bucknell chapter.

Chokers, high-waisted denim, crop-tops, slip dresses, overalls, grunge, velvet…the 90’s are calling. It seems as though as we move forward in fashion we are reverting back to the past. Why is it that we recycle trends rather than making new ones?

To that end, because it’s nearly impossible to think of something that has truly never been done before, designers look for inspiration within previous trends. They are in search of what worked, what didn’t, and from there begin to reinvent. Of course, the usage of previous trends must be tweaked in order to fit the confines of modern youthful fashion. Yet, their is a historical essence within these new designs which is pulling today’s fashion culture backwards.

Indeed, this begs the question as to which retro trends are fleeting and those that are here to stay. Although a trend, by its very definition, is fading, some trends have the power to become closet staples. Trends come back because they worked- they’re universally flattering, comfortable and accessible. For instance, thigh-boots were a fleeting trend because they are meant for a very specific body type. Yet, it is the ankle boot that has been in style for decades. With a new few embellishments over the years, they continue to reappear, a wardrobe essential.

Although fashion trends come and go, right now we’re experiencing a resurgence of trends from the ’90s. Here are three ’90s clothing essentials that look like they are here to stay: choker necklaces, white sneakers, and bomber jackets.

THE CHOKER

From leather to lace to suede, the choker has been reinvented in ways that nobody ever imagined. They have become an essential part of every wardrobe bringing about an emergence of brands that focus on the necklace alone.

WHITE SNEAKERS

The white sneaker popped up last year and is here to stay. White has made its way to be the new black and can be paired easily with anything from denim during the day to skirts and dresses at night.

BOMBER JACKET

Lastly, the bomber jacket is an extremely versatile piece that adds just the right amount of toughness. Regardless of your style, you can only find that a bomber enhances your look for any season.

Retro styles can be some of the best fashion investments for any and all wardrobes. Whether sticking to the classic trends or adding a modern twist, the return of retro styles, especially those of the ‘90s, is at the frontline of the fashion world and we should all take part!

What's up Collegiettes! I am so excited to be one half of the Campus Correspondent team for Bucknell's chapter of Her Campus along with the lovely Julia Shapiro.  I am currently a senior at Bucknell studying Creative Writing and Sociology.
