Reasons to Go to the Gym Besides Working Out

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bucknell chapter.

There are plenty of reasons not to go to the gym. There is nothing enjoyable about squatting over and over with legs that scream in pain. In reality, everything about the gym is unnatural. Why jog for miles without ever moving forward? People were never meant to run on human hamster wheels. But at the same time, people often overlook the pleasant aspects of going to the gym. Besides obvious health benefits that come from staying in shape, the gym experience is underrated.

Television

The gym is one of the few spots on campus with cable television. While that might not seem like much, there are many reasons to pick an elliptical facing a hanging flat screen. The location of a treadmill can determine the course of an entire day. Working out while watching the news keeps students informed about life off-campus. Running in front of a lighthearted talk show hosted by a comedian like Ellen Degeneres ensures leaving the gym with a smile. On the other hand, watching basketball highlights on Sport Center might impress the cute guy in Econ 103. Despite the growing popularity of “Netflix and Chill,” there is still something to be said for live television.

Workout Wear

Workout wear has recently become a huge trend, and it is easy to see why. Active clothing is both unbelievably comfortable and functional. Many celebrities including Kate Hudson and Carrie Underwood have launched their own line of workout wear. Every girl has that perfect pair of cropped leggings, and going to the gym is the perfect opportunity to break out brightly colored tank tops and Nike shorts. Working out even justifies splurging at LuLu Lemon, because sometimes diligence and committing to a healthy lifestyle deserves to be rewarded. Also, everyone looks good in a pair of yoga pants.

Boys, Boys, Boys

There is nothing more attractive than someone who cares about his health and takes the time to be active. For that reason, what better place is there to look for that special someone than at the gym? The gym is a great place to meet people. Right after class, every gym-goer heads to their afternoon work out. It’s no secret that Bucknell students are notoriously attractive. Speaking of looking good in tank tops and spandex, guys don’t look half bad in gym shorts. Maybe it’s not wrong to spend time on the StairMaster sculpting your own body while also appreciating the bodies of our student body.

While working out will never be easy, there is a silver lining to time spent lifting medicine balls beyond just staying in shape. The gym affords opportunities that cannot be found anywhere else, providing an alternative to spending time in class and dorm rooms. So rather than dreading your next workout, focus on the little things that make working out fun.
