Real Simple Solutions

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bucknell chapter.

We’re a little isolated in the “Bucknell Bubble” – it can often be difficult to find easy, store-bought solutions to everyday problems here in Central PA. Our lack of variety in stores forces us to get a little creative sometimes, so here are some tips on solving everyday problems with everyday objects!

1. No Speakers

Don’t have enough money for speakers, but still want to blast music for your pre-game? Place your iPhone/iPod in a bowl or any concave shape…it amplifies the volume.

2. DVD Scratches

All you want is a little Disney movie comfort, and of course, Tangled is skipping. Use a dry cloth and some toothpaste to even out small scratches. Put the movie back in, sit back and enjoy.

3. Last Minute Job Interview

If you don’t have an iron, or don’t have the time, pull the classic Lauren-Conrad-of-the-Hills move: flat iron or straighten the wrinkles out of your clothes. Make sure the setting is on low; settling for a wrinkled shirt is better than showing up with burn marks.

4. Post-Workout Funk

We all know how to get a good sweat on at the gym. Need to make sure your shoes don’t smell afterward? Fill your shoes with newspaper to absorb the smell. Or you can even use a dryer sheet!

5.  Shaving Scratch

We’ve all had that shaving cut that refuses to stop bleeding. If you don’t want to rock the band-aid look, rub some Chapstick or Vaseline over the cut.

6. Pen Exploding

You might be writing out your final problem in the library when your pen spontaneously explodes (probably on your favorite shirt, too). Don’t panic – just apply hand sanitizer to the stain immediately and then wash your clothes as soon as you get a chance.

7.  Mirror Fog

It’s so annoying when you’re in a rush to get ready and the mirror is still steamed up from the shower. Well, kill two birds with one stone. When blow-drying your hair, blow-dry the mirror too – the steam will disappear.

8. Manicure in Minutes

Trying to pull off the trendy half-moon manicure? Cut paper reinforcements in half. After applying your base coat, attach the reinforcements to the tips of your nails. Then, just apply the top coat to your tips and you’re good to go!

9. Baby Powder Shower

We’ve all experienced this: no time for a shower and no dry shampoo in sight. Apply baby powder to the roots of your hair in order absorb the oil and build-up. Make sure to rub it all in – white patches can give your secret away.

10. Keyboard Crunch

Enjoying a Nutri-Grain bar while typing up your paper? To get out all the crumbs of your keyboard, use one of your make-up brushes to clean in between the keys.

Sarah Dubow graduated from school in 2013 and is a Digital Strategist at Marina Maher Communications in New York City. After serving as Campus Correspondent at Bucknell University, she is so excited to continue being a part of the Her Campus team! Besides traversing the city and trying to figure out what being a "real person" really means, Sarah loves long walks on the beach, sipping pina coladas, and getting caught in the rain (kidding!). Real favorites include traveling, writing, kickboxing, and making up ridiculous lyrics to the latest songs. She absolutely loves anything that involves cupcakes, butterflies, glitter, and anything Parisian and specializes in baking with far too much chocolate and obsessively watching shows bound to be cancelled after the first season. Though the long term path for this post-grad collegiette remains unclear, she's looking forward to all the new 20-something adventures that await her!
