To the Girl Who Didn’t Get Her Greek Life “Happy Ending”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bucknell chapter.

For those of us who just went through the recruitment process, you know how stressful this time can be. The constant pressure to look and act a certain way in order to impress a group of women that are supposed to “accept you for who you are” is not only an ironic paradox, but also something that can be extremely hard on your self-esteem. TV shows, movies, and social media make it seem like everything always works out for the best, and you will “find where you’re meant to be”. But, for some well deserving girls, it doesn’t work out like that. Call it bad luck or a “computer error”, but the recruitment process does not work in everybody’s favor, leaving some girls possibly feeling unwanted and confused about what they did wrong.

But the truth is, if you are currently in this position, you did nothing wrong. A couple days talking to numerous different girls about the exact same things does not change your self-worth, and the letters you wear or don’t wear say nothing about who you are, what your “social status” is, and how the right people in the Bucknell community will portray you.

The point is, whether you are a part of Greek life or not, do not let it define you. Sometimes the universe has a funny way of surprising us, and not being in one organization might give you more free time to do something amazing that you haven’t even discovered yet. This process is so easily taken personally, and understandably so, but that is why it is crucial to take a step back and put things in perspective. This is four years of your life where there is essentially an organization for everything: do not take that for granted. Find what you’re interested and passionate about, because that is what is going to make your college experience worthwhile, and how you are going to create the right social circle. If you are meant to be friends with somebody, you are going to meet them in other organizations where you have common interests besides Greek life. You are not “stuck”, but in reality, you are completely free; and that might be exactly where you’re supposed to be.
