Dorm Room Dining: A Guide to Easy and “Healthy” Dorm-Made Meals!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bucknell chapter.

For many college students, the idea of eating a “healthy” meal leaves us feeling hopeless – especially on cold days when the walk to the caf seems to stretch on for miles. So, as much as we want to fight it, the Easy Mac and Ramen Noodles calls to us from the bottom drawer, and before we know it, we just consumed 900 mg of sodium for dinner. Although these easy fixes to immediate hunger are totally acceptable in moderation, a quick trip to the grocery store can #bless us with the ingredients to make some yummy meals/snacks that are just as quick, and a lot better for you: all within the comfort of your ~ dorm sweet dorm ~.

Next time you head to Walmart, pick up Quaker One Minute Oats  and some of your favorite oatmeal toppings. After about two minutes in the microwave, you have homemade oatmeal, which tastes so much better than the instant packets!

Another super quick and “dorm doable” meal is a smoothie bowl! Forget the $9 acai bowls from The Bison as they are basically just watery granola, and stock up on some frozen fruit and a $14 dollar Walmart blender! Add milk, fruit, and a banana (from the caf of course) and in seconds you have a smoothie bowl fit for a Hawaiian getaway! P.S. If you want to get fancy, add granola, honey, and some extra fruit on top to make it even better!

Finally, a new twist on an old classic: mini peanut butter and jelly cracker sandwiches! Grab some Ritz crackers, slab on some PB&J, add some apple slices and you are good to go! You may feel like you’ve just made a meal for a 4 year old, but you’d be surprised how filling these bad boys are. Plus, you get a major benefit of protein from the peanut butter.
