The Art of Wearing a Beanie

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bucknell chapter.

With winter in full swing, one of the biggest problems a girl faces is looking cute while trying to keep warm. Luckily, the solution is so easy this season: a beanie! Historically, beanies have been reserved for the high school hipster trying too hard in her retro band t-shirt, but that is no longer the case. This winter, beanies have become the newest craze.  Beanies are not just fashionable; they also serve the important role of keeping us warm during these miserably cold months, which is why everyone should be rocking one. HerCampus can help you figure out how!

Beanies have become a true fashion statement. You can find them in an array of fabrics: ribbed, fleece, knitted, etc. A great thing about beanies is how versatile they are.  A neutral colored beanie in a shade of gray, white, or black can be effortlessly added to just about any outfit. You can also choose to make your beanie the focal point of your outfit by wearing jeans with a neutral top and a beanie adorned with a fur pom-pom, in a bright color or fun print.

The classic way to wear a beanie is at your hairline or just behind with a slouch in the back.  Before putting your beanie on, tuck your hair behind your ears to begin.  Then to get the perfect slouch, pull your beanie halfway down your forehead.  You can keep your beanie on your forehead closer to your eyebrows or pull it back to the crown of your head. Whichever you choose, the slouch always makes a beanie look effortless!  When you are headed outside, the warmest way to wear it is to pull your beanie back down your forehead a little bit above your eyebrows.

For those who are a little skeptical of the typical beanie slouch a great way to transform your beanie is by cuffing it.  A cuff allows your beanie to fit snug on your head and transforms it into more of a winter hat.  This style allows you to stay even warmer during your trek across campus.

You can also easily achieve an edgier look with your new beanie. Once your beanie is on, instead of allowing it to slouch, pull at the top of the beanie, and let it stand as high as possible.  In a bright color, this look will really make a statement!

A really special thing about a beanie is that all types of hair can look great in one!  If you have bangs, pushing them to one side, letting them fall loosely across your forehead, or tucking them behind your beanie are three great options.  There are so many options for long-haired girls as well, including tucking you hair behind your ears and letting it fall loosely or braiding it.

So, this winter, embrace the beanie and wear it with confidence!
