8 Creative D.I.Y. Halloween Costumes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bucknell chapter.

In the regular world, Halloween is when children dress up in costumes and beg for candy. In Girl World, Halloween is the one night a year when a girl can…get totally creative with her costume!! Possibly the craziest holiday of all, Halloween calls for total creativity and originality. In college, there’s so much pressure to have the best costume of all, especially in a sea of fabulous girls like ourselves! Temporary Halloween costume stores are opening up all over the place, but shelling out $50 dollars for a costume sounds worse than crashing from all the sugar consumed on Halloween night.

For someone like me, I love getting creative with costumes; for others, it can seem like a scary nightmare. So, after doing some Googling and some of my own thinking, here is a list of eight great, do-it-yourself, cheap, and totally unique Halloween costume ideas for us college girls on a budget:

  1. Pretty Peacock:
This outfit requires a bit more work, but is absolutely one of my favorite looks. Grab your favorite blue body-con dress and pin a TON of peacock feathers to it (they sell these at most craft stories, Wal-Mart, Target, etc.). Get creative with blue and green eye shadow to complete the costume, and even add dangling feather earrings or a feather headpiece to take it one step further!
  2. Deviled Egg: Looking cute while being witty is totally “over-easy”! Grab an old white tank or t-shirt and draw a HUGE yellow circle in the middle of the shirt. Pair this homemade top with red Soffee shorts or a tight red skirt, devil horns (I got mine for $3 at Wal-Mart), and some black boots, and you’re good to go! The totally random yellow circle doubles as a great conversation starter at a party!
  3. Little Miss Piggy in a Blanket: For an adorable outfit, I suggest wearing a pink t-shirt, black leggings, and wrapping a shawl around your shoulders. Add cute pig ears, snout, and curly tail to complete this totally easy yet very flattering and really cute look!

  4. Sushihanna Sweetie:
In honor of Lewisburg’s newest and hottest restaurant, make your own sushi roll costume! Wear a strapless white dress and put your favorite brightly-colored pillow on your back by tying it around your waist with a green sash. Cap it off by adding a small, lime green cereal bowl attached to a headband to represent wasabi. Tanoshinde (have fun!)
  5. Raining Cats & Dogs: You know how it always rains in Lewisburg? Use those Hunter Boots and Northface raincoat in a different way than for just rain protection!! Deck yourself out in your rain gear, and take your favorite stuffed animals (preferably dogs and cats) and pin them to an umbrella. You’ll look totally original and will get great feedback all night! And, in the case of inclimate weather, you’ll be totally prepared .
  6. The “We Can Do It!” Lady: The key element to this costume: DENIM! Pair your favorite Chambray button-up shirt with a pair of high-waisted jeans (flared jeans work great!); add some red lipstick; and tease your hair in the front, pull into a bun, and finish off with a headscarf for a costume with retro style!
  7. Bad News: Never know what to do with all the copies of The Bucknellian you have laying around your dorm? Make a collage that you can wear as a costume! Tape different newspaper articles to your favorite black dress, then write the word “BAD” across your breastbone for a costume that’ll be the hottest word on the street!

  8. Rock, Paper, Scissors:
Want to dress up with a group but afraid you’ll all dress too typical? Have no fear! This idea is totally cute and very unique even though it requires some work. Pair a plain t-shirt and leggings with homemade cutouts of a rock, a sheet of paper, and scissors as seen in the picture. On campus, the CAP and Craft Centers have all the supplies you’ll need to make these large cutouts; it could be a great bonding experience for you and your friends! Tape these cutouts onto your shirts, and get creative with headpieces and accessories (for scissors, silver jewelry is a must!).

Hopefully this Halloween, your only worry will be how awesome you can make your costume versus the amount of money you’d be spending on one. These DIY tips are 100% original, easy, and eye-catching, so you’ll get the recognition you deserve from your friends and cuties on campus. Happy Halloween ladies; I hope you all have a spook-tacular time!

Real favorites include traveling, writing, kickboxing, and making up ridiculous lyrics to the latest songs. She absolutely loves anything that involves cupcakes, butterflies, glitter, and anything Parisian and specializes in baking with far too much chocolate and obsessively watching shows bound to be cancelled after the first season.
