Not Your Average Pop: 5 Underground Artists

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Have you been flipping through the radio channels recently, looking for a new song to listen to but coming up unsuccessful? The top 40 hits may be catchy, but after hearing “Shape of You” by Ed Sheeran for the thousandth time, you may be looking for something different. Here are some of my recommendations if you’re trying to switch up your music.

1. Astrid S

Astrid S is a Norwegian pop artist whose airy vocals and synthesized beats combine perfectly to create her unique, stylized sound. She has been featured on two tracks by headlining artists: Shawn Mendes and The Vamps.

Such a Boy

Such A Boy”’s catchy one-liners perfectly capture the emotions of a girl struggling with an inconsistent boyfriend. The memorable chorus echoes the tale of a girl and boy who are caught in the cycle of an on-and-off relationship where all she wants to say is “don’t be such a boy.” The music video gets extra points for featuring heartthrob Herman Tømmeraas.

2 AM

2 AM” delves into those feelings that pop up in the early hours of the morning — when you suddenly realize how much you miss your boyfriend or girlfriend. The quiet quality of the song slowly builds into a bopping beat, matching the mixed emotions of sadness, longing, love, and happiness that result in the insomnia she references.

2. Maty Noyes

Maty Noyes is a twenty-year-old emerging American pop artist. She’s featured on tracks by The Weeknd and Kygo but has yet to release a full solo album.

In the song “In My Mind,” Noyes toys with the idea of fantasizing about other guys when her boyfriend starts doubting her faithfulness. Her smooth vocals and the silky melody capture the alluring qualities of a world outside a committed relationship.

Noyes explores the idea of a great relationship with a nice guy (the seemingly perfect idea of love) when all she wants is to feel something. She challenges the guy to argue with her and complain just so she can have an experience other than the ordinary.

3. Conor Maynard

Conor Maynard is a British singer and YouTuber who originally became famous for his covers of popular songs. Since his rise in popularity several years ago, he has released an album and several singles. He has also participated in several sing-offs with guests such as Olly Murs, Pixie Lott, and The Vamps.

Maynard addresses both the idea of love at first sight and anonymity in his first single, “Vegas Girl.” His silky voice, slick lyrics, and bumping bass combine to make the perfect shout out to sexy girls everywhere who just want to let down their hair and shake, shake, shake.

Maynard’s collaboration with Kriss Kross Amsterdam has a very club-ready sound, fit with both a heavy beat and exotic melody. Conor repeatedly asks, “Who do you love?” as a way to broach the topic of liking two people at the same time and being forced to choose between them.

4. Darin

Darin is a Swedish male pop artist who first gained popularity in the early 2000s after participating in a national singing competition. Since the release of his first album, he has done several tours and released new music both in English and Swedish.

Step Up

Although the music video boasts the image of an edgy teen boy with braces, don’t let that deter you. Step Up,” one of Darin’s earlier songs, is an upbeat, electronic heavy jam that is sure to get you either singing or dancing.

Want Ya!

Want Ya!” is another dance ready song fit with an electronic section perfect for the dance battle you’ve always dreamed about. Darin croons about seeing a hot girl at a party and trying to get her attention, all while wearing a leather jacket and busting some fresh moves.

5. FO&O

FO&O, originally known as The FOOO Conspiracy, is a Swedish boy band originally discovered by Justin Bieber. They started by doing street performances until they were able to release several hit singles and an album. They originally had four members until their leader decided to separate from the group.

Run With Us

Run With Us” is a very beat-heavy track that showcases the smooth vocals of the members. The group aims to display their awesomeness and how the party isn’t complete without them there. The catchy chorus will have you singing along in no time.

My Girl

This track features a much more jazzy sound complete with a steady bass to compliment the smooth vocals. The song examines the idea of developing a relationship with a certain girl who the band can’t stop thinking about.

I hope that you gained something from this article, whether it’s a new favorite song or artist, or even just a decision to broaden your taste in pop music!
