Meet Allie Antonevich: Not Your Average BU Freshman

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Every friend group has that one member who just radiates cool, and Allie Antonevich is one of those friends. She is a unique individual who loves the most random things and could talk about eclectic music for hours. Yes, she used to play field hockey and is a very good student, but when it comes to friendship and collages, she really shines.

Growing up and in elementary school, what were your favorite things to do?

I really liked to read and write in elementary school. I was very much an introvert and rather than talking to a lot of people I preferred going into my own world. I also did a lot of cooking. I remember [my best friend and I] would try to make new recipes.

Music is a really large part of your life, why do you think it has such a big impact on you?

How deep do you want me to get? (chuckles) I have a lot of different interests and I think with music, you can enter a lot of different genres based on your mood, if that makes sense. I think too, that it’s really special that it has the power to remind you of certain moments in your life that you might otherwise forget… I love being able to send people playlists and I love receiving them.

Who are some of your favorite artists and why?

LANY is by far my favorite band in this entire universe. Paul Jason Klein has a beautiful soul. I think too, I got really into LANY in early 2016, and then that led me to find other similar bands. That introduced me to the band Wet and the singer Amber Bain, [who is] the Japanese House. Some other artists that I really admire are Frank Ocean, Sufjan Stevens, Men I Trust, and Cuco.

What is your opinion on Paul Jason Klein and Dua Lipa?

Alright, it took me a while––because I love that man––to realize that he was in another relationship and I had to be okay with that. However, then I realized that I wanted nothing but the best and I wanted him to be happy because if you listen to LANY’s debut album, you’ll find that some girl broke his heart. However, now [he and Dua Lipa] are broken up. I have no idea why and all I can say is that I hope we get a really good album about it.

A lot of people who know you would agree that you’re very cool, do you agree? Do you view yourself the same way others view you?

I am very comfortable with who I am. I don’t know if I would describe myself as “cool”. I don’t think I’m cool, I think I’m just a version of myself that I like. I have been the same version of myself for my entire life…I [haven’t] changed since kindergarten.

You really like making collages; when did you start doing it as a hobby?

The summer of going into high school, I was reading Rookie Yearbook 1, and they had an article about making zines with collages in them. I had a lot of magazines that I just read and kept in my room. I’m a very visual person so I found that it was a good way to express myself.

Do you have one collage that really speaks to you and why?

I make a lot of collages and I think I make them when I’m feeling things the most. So I don’t think one, in particular, stands out because whenever I make something there is a feeling or emotion that is attached to it.

What got you interested in Japanese culture?

I met one of my close friends in elementary school. Her name was Mai and she didn’t speak a lot of English, so I made her a Japanese to English picture dictionary. We ended up spending a lot of time together throughout elementary school and she definitely was the one who introduced me to Japanese culture… We would take trips to a Japanese stationary store together, trade Japanese stickers, and then when I would spend time at her house, we would be eating Japanese snacks and everything like that. I think too, I’m someone who really likes simplicity and I find that as a part of Japanese culture. Also, Studio Ghibli changed my life.

What are your career inspirations?

I don’t really know what I want to do with my life right now. I hope in the future I’m combining my passion for writing and music but ultimately, I aspire to be happy with the job I end up at and I hope it doesn’t feel like a job.

What is one item that you own that you couldn’t live without?

My glasses. That’s it. Good.

You’re very interested in fashion, have you ever made a major fashion faux pas?

YES! Seventh grade Allie rolling into Clark Middle School with black combat boots, metallic silver tights, a knit chevron free people skirt (colors included purple, pink, and hot pink), a hot pink sweater, and two watches, one of them being a Hello Kitty watch. I hope I learned from that experience.

How would you describe your style?

I think my style changes. I don’t know if I can describe it. Some days I’m wearing all black and Doc Martens. Other days I’m feeling really floaty and I want to wear high-waisted jeans and pink sneakers and have my hair all soft.

Everyone expresses themselves in different ways, and Allie’s way is special. Not special in a bad way–––special in the way that you are intrigued by how her brain works and want to know all its ins and outs. All of her attributes and characteristics add up to make this one very interesting, dynamic, and relatable human bean.
