This week’s Campus Celeb is quite the busy bee – she interns at Channel 7 News, has worked at a fashion PR company and is currently the Director of PR, Advertising and Marketing for One-Way Treatment Inc., a non-profit organization in Somerville, MA, that works to help female victims of domestic violence. Joana Marques (COM ’13) studies public relations, advertising and economics, not to mention her involvement in a multitude of organizations outside of BU.
One-Way Treatment Inc. is dedicated to educating young girls and women about domestic abuse and how to prevent it. As the Director of Public Relations, Advertising and Marketing for the non-profit, Joana writes press releases, helps the CEO plan fundraising events, and interviews guests at events. They have monthly dinners with professionals at locations like the Charles Mark Hotel and BoMa restaurant. For last month’s event, which was called “Venus Vs. Mars,” the organization asked men and women questions about the opposite sex that they have always wanted to know. The event was really interesting and turned out to be quite a success!
Joana’s favorite part about working for One-Way Treatment Inc. is knowing that what she’s working so hard to accomplish will make a difference in someone’s life. She also has the opportunity to meet a lot of different individuals who have a variety of professions at the events that the organization holds. “It’s a great feeling to know that so many men and women from different backgrounds support our cause and want to help make a difference,” she said. As for the future, Joana loves working at One-Way Treatment Inc. so much that she wants to continue working there for as long as she can. No matter where she ends up, we think this Campus Celeb has quite a bright future ahead of her.
