How to Find a Halloween Costume Without Breaking the Bank

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

Aside from midterms, boot and scarf weather, and pumpkin spice lattes at Starbucks, October can only mean one thing: Halloween is here! And what better way to unwind than to hit the city with your girls and guys for a night of fun. Even if only for a night, you’re no longer the bookworm pulling an all-nighter in a secluded corner of Mugar or the hardworking intern juggling the books and the boss’s orders. You have the opportunity to take on the persona of any character you’d like. And it doesn’t have to cost you a fortune. So put away your little hammer, back away from your dear piggy bank, and pay attention to these alternatives to buying an expensive halloween getup.

Ebay: If you’re familiar with the site then you know that almost every product available to mankind is being sold by someone on some continent on the globe on eBay. And generally at prices that will satisfy any college student on a budget, might I add. Build your entire costume through eBay purchases or opt for just a few minor accessories to compliment your look. Shop for new or used products; whatever suits your fancy…or wallet. Amazon is also an option for those partial to this online retailer instead. But keep in mind the estimated arrival dates. After all, what good is a Halloween costume if it arrives when Thanksgiving is lurking around the corner.

Goodwill: Let’s be honest…none of us are “too good” to shop at Goodwill. Between tuition, books, supplies, clubs and activities, and the necessities for basic college survival, our pockets are suffering a bit. Keep your eyes open and remain patient, and you could easily find an essential for your costume. And for a bargain too! Goodwill can definitely add a little bang to your buck.

Marhsalls: If you’re not too keen on eBay or Goodwill, department stores such as Marshalls may be an option. While you may not necessarily find a full blown Halloween costume, you could easily find any basic clothing items or accessories you may need for your costume. And if all else fails, feel free to pick up a reasonably priced, smokin’ new outfit for the night. After all, if you can’t find the perfect costume, you could at least find the perfect party dress.

Garment District: Between vintage clothing and a large assortment of costumes, the Garment District just may be the home for all of your halloween costuming needs. While the official costume section can get a bit pricey, the thriftier clothing is pretty cheap. So have fun, show a little thrifting ingenuity and piece an awesome costume together with some great, inexpensive finds.

Your own closet: Get creative! Chances are you have a costume waiting for you inside your own closet. Borrow your boyfriends white button down, add a pair of tube socks, and don’t forget the Ray Ban wayfarers…you’ve got a Risky Business costume. Grab a denim button down (undoubtedly, every girl on campus owns one!), a red bandana, and flex you’re muscles as hard as you can…you’re Rosie the Riveter. Cut two holes in your old tank top, add a colored bra underneath, and a mini skirt…Voila! You’re Regina George from Mean Girls. Your options are limitless! You may just have to put on your thinking cap and let the creative juices flow.

Good luck Halloweeners! And remember, a great costume doesn’t have to stress your bank account. You’re only going to wear it for a night anyway….And then its back to the books!
