Getting Cultured in Boston

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

There’s T-2 weeks left until summer (unbelievable!) so between studying for finals and saying your goodbyes, it is important to find time to have one last night on the town with your girls. It’s time to get cultured.

SYMPHONY
My friends and I decided to finally use those Boston Symphony Orchestra cards we have had all year (they are available for free at the GSU) and go see Mozart’s Requiem last Friday night. It’s fun to dress up and head over to Huntington Ave., just a few short stops on the BU Shuttle.

But this night on the town doesn’t end with the symphony. Exploring the surrounding area is a must. There is a Red Mango, Panera, some cute restaurants (including an Ethiopian Café) and even a food store with a musical themed name: the Symphony Market.

If you are rushing tickets at the BSO, make sure to go early because that is open to anyone, not just students. You can’t beat the price though—it only costs $9! More information about ticketing and a calendar of events for the symphony is available here.

BALLET
Another option, if you are looking for culture in the city, is to go to the ballet. In the winter, a group of my friends and I student rushed tickets to see the Nutcracker. It is super quick and easy. Just go to the box office two hours before the show with twenty dollars. Their performances are held at the Boston Opera House, one of the most gorgeous venues and a must-see place that you should stop by at least once before graduation. Between now and the time finals period ends, two distinctly different ballets will be offered. One, Bella Figura, is a contemporary ballet that is being headlined in America through the Boston Ballet in part due to its risqué and skin-revealing nature. The other is a set of four works by the most famous, classic ballet choreographers Balanchine and Robbins. Check out rushed ticket options here

MUSICAL THEATER
If you are more of a musical theatre kind of girl, the infamous Grease is playing downtown at the Citi Wang Theatre. Check out BosTix.org or one of the BosTix booths at Copley Square or Faneuil Hall to get ½ price tickets in advance or on the day off. They also offer discounts to other shows, so this is a great resource to use if you and your friends want to get in some last minute culture and bonding time before heading home for summer vacation.

No matter what you wind up seeing, you will be glad you fit in some extra girl time to make those college memories that will surely last with you for a lifetime.
