Best TV Shows of Summer 2013

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

There are plenty things to love about summer- shorts and sandals weather, bonfires and beach parties, and no school… I mean really, what’s not to love? Many people like to take advantage of the warm weather by hiking and swimming and just being super active, and while there is nothing wrong with that, personally I think the best part of summer is doing absolutely nothing. Some of us (i.e. me) just want to lie on our couches with a glass of lemonade and watch hours upon hours of mindless TV. That being said, for my fellow TV addicts, here are some of the most highly anticipated TV shows of summer 2013.

1.     So You Think You Can Dance

Premiering Tuesday May 14 at 8 p.m. on Fox is everyone’s favorite dance show! Now, I don’t know about you, but I live for this show every summer and the 10th season promises to be better than ever. Even if you don’t watch the entire season, at least tune in for the auditions; watching people without an ounce of rhythm in their body, swear they are America’s best dancer and then proceed to have spasms on the stage WILL cheer you up.

2.     The Bachelorette

This is one of those shows that I always wonder how it hasn’t been cancelled yet and then I’m like “duh, because people like me keep watching it.” After every season I swear I’m done watching it and then the next season comes around and I just can’t help myself. Say what you want about this show, but if nothing else, it is very entertaining even if it isn’t the most mentally stimulating show on air right now. The new season kicks off May 20 at 9 p.m. on ABC.

3.     Wipeout

Personally I’m not one for physical humor, so Wipeout is usually pretty hard for me to stomach, but most of my friends love this show. If you like seeing people get knocked off of 30ft blocks, hit in the face with revolving beams and basically suffering immense physical pain then this is the show for you. Tune in to ABC May 9 at 8 p.m.

4.     Pretty Little Liars

The show, which has led to many a sleepless night, returns to ABC Family on June 11 at 8 p.m. I’m sure I am not the only one who has been itching for this to return; the spring finale left me with too many questions and not enough answers! Fun fact: ABC recently announced that there will be a spinoff series called Ravenswood premiering in October (as if Pretty Little Liars wasn’t enough drama…)

5.     Breaking Bad

This summer will be bittersweet for Breaking Bad fans as we finally say our goodbyes to our favorite drug-dealing chemistry teacher as these will unfortunately be the final 8 episodes of the critically acclaimed series. This final season promises to be perhaps the most intense and heart-wrenching one and airs August 11 at 10 p.m. on AMC. Have your tissue box ready because Bryan Cranston (the actor who plays Walter White) has stated quite frankly, “there are going to be tears.”

6.     True Blood

While personally I’m more of a Vampire Diaries kind of girl, I’m still really excited for this season of True Blood; the last season ended on such a crazy note! When you think the series couldn’t possibly get any gorier, Bill is reincarnated into some kind of naked, (which I had no complaints about) super evil vampire god. I have no predictions for this sixth season other than I’m pretty sure there will be even more bloodshed. This 10 episode season kicks off on HBO, June 16 at 9 p.m.

7.     Dexter

Ironically, it was last summer I got hooked on this crime thriller and literally went through 6 seasons in about 3 days (don’t judge me), and now it appears that this summer I may be saying goodbye to it. There has been no official confirmation but most reports indicate that this will be Dexter’s final season. Nevertheless, from the way the last season ended (Deb putting a bullet through her captain’s head) I’m sure we can expect nothing less than a thrilling final season as it has been described as “the beginning of the end for Dexter.” Make sure you catch every moment of this 8th season, premiering June 30 at 9 p.m. on Showtime.

8.     Girl Meets World

If you are a 90’s kid, you have to be looking forward to this show. Disney has answered our prayers and decided to create a series sequel to Boy Meets World, featuring Cory and Topanga (aka the best TV couple ever) as parents! The show will follow their 13 year-old daughter Riley as the focus of the series and both Danielle Fishel and Ben Savage are reprising their old roles; they are even bringing back Mr. Feeny! Are you excited yet? No official word on when Girl Meets World will air but many sources have pointed to summer-fall 2013 premiere. Fingers crossed for summer.
