It’s lavish. It’s elegant. It’s mysterious. And whether you’ve been to one or not, it always sounds like boatloads of fun.

Originating from the 15th century Renaissance era in Venice, the masquerade ball has transformed through time and location and is now a common theme for formal events such as dances, proms, and galas.

On BU’s campus, Global Brigades hosted their annual Masquerade Ball fundraiser, benefiting all seven Global Brigades groups earlier this month. And in the general Boston area, the UMass Vietnamese Student Association and the New England Intercollegiate Vietnamese Student Association have partnered up to hold a masquerade ball themed “A Night Under the Stars” on Saturday December 2nd.

Masquerade attire has come a long way since the corsets and full hoop dresses, but the elegance still remains. Whether your choice be a versatile, short number or a more elegant long gown, there’s so many ways to curate your own “look”, masquerade style! Inspiration below (oh, and best of all, they’re all under $45 and available with Prime shipping!)

Pair this elegant full-length, vintage inspired gown with a half- mask to place the emphasis on the beading of the bodice. Go big or go home, right?
