Alex's Eats: Valentine's Day Edition!
My true feelings regarding Valentine’s Day are still yet to be determined, but one thing I know for sure is that I never turn down an excuse to go out for a good meal. With the Big Day less than a week away, your plans may very well be still up in the air- whether you have a special someone or are flying solo. The following restaurants are places to keep in mind when figuring out what to do come the 14th, but if all else fails, a good box of chocolates is always sufficient!
WITH A DATE:
Petit Robert Bistro, 468 Commonwealth Avenue: As broke college students, I am assuming that your honey cannot whisk you off to Paris for the weekend (and if he can, I envy you!). The next best thing to seeing the Eiffel Tower in person is dining at this small French restaurant. Petit Robert has been named one of the best French restaurants in Boston, with a menu including French staples such as coq au vin (chicken and wine) and steak frites. And do not forget chocolate mousse for dessert! BONUS- the restaurant is conveniently located a block past Kenmore Square, so no need to worry about walking long distances in those killer “date night” heels.
Ten Tables, 597 Centre St, Jamaica Plain: As the name of the restaurant hints at, Ten Tables is cozy eatery with literally ten tables. It won the Best of Boston Award in 2009 by Boston Magazine for one of the most romantic restaurants in the city, as well for being affordable. Entrees, including salmon and a braised short rib dish, are all under $26, and the homemade desserts are each fairly priced at $8. Make reservations ASAP- space is limited!
Finale, Several locations in Boston and Brookline:If a big dinner is out of your price range, have no fear- a romantic evening filled with delicious desserts is something equally as memorable (Dessert is the best part of the meal anyways, right). Finale has endless amounts of sugary and chocolate-y confections, ranging from molten chocolate cake and apple pie to crème brulee and cheesecake. Desserts are available in the restaurant, or can be taken to go.
TO ALL MY SINGLE LADIES- Just because you are single doesn’t mean you can’t go out and celebrate! Here are some fun ideas of places to go with your girlfriends:
Brunch: This year, Valentine’s Day falls on a Sunday, making it the perfect day to go out for a delicious mid-morning, pre-lunch meal. Hit up Newbury Street and enjoy brunch at one of several restaurants, including the infamous Stephanie’s on Newbury and the equally fabulous, Sonsie.
The Melting Pot, The Boston Park Plaza Hotel: What wins over a girl’s heart more than melted chocolate? I cannot think of much else. The Melting Pot is a fondue restaurant, featuring cheese fondue as well as pots of simmering oil for meat and poultry. But, be warned: save room for dessert! The best part of this restaurant is the chocolate fondue, featured in white, milk, or dark chocolate. It comes with loads of fresh fruit, brownies, marshmallows, and angel food cake. I recommend coming here in groups- it can err on the side of pricey.
