6 Major Blockbusters You Have to See this Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

I love movies; whether old, new, studio-made installments of massive franchises or small indie films, watching a well-made movie is an experience like no other. This summer, I made a pact with myself that I would make an effort to go see more movies in the theater. Hitting up your local movie theater is a great way to spend a day and get out of the heat for a little while, and you can really turn it into an adventure if you take along a few friends or even a significant other! I love the whole theater experience–it may be a bit expensive nowadays, but there’s nothing like sitting in a plush movie theater seat and getting to see an amazing movie on the big screen! If you’ve got a couple hours to spare and some money to spend, I highly recommend getting a ticket to any one of these highly anticipated summer releases!

1. Avengers: Infinity War

To be honest, the only way you haven’t heard about this movie is if you live under a rock. One of the biggest, most talked about releases of the summer, this movie does not disappoint. Whether you’ve been a hardcore Marvel fan since forever or have never seen a Marvel movie in your life, I guarantee you’ll like this movie. It’s funny, action-packed, heartwarming, and shocking, to say the least. This movie has all your favorites: Robert Downey Jr. is incredible as always as Iron Man,  Chris Pratt kills it once again as fan favorite Star Lord, and young newcomer Tom Holland really steals every scene he’s in as Spider-Man. I’ve already seen it once, and I have plans to see it many more times!

2. Deadpool 2

Another superhero movie but with a completely different tone and cast of characters, the sequel to 2016’s box-office smash Deadpool is just about as hyped up as Infinity War, if not more so! Ryan Reynolds returns as the “Merc with a mouth,” and really just seems at home in the role. This movie promises to be just as uproariously funny and super gory as the previous installment. Again, even if your not a comic book superhero movie type of person, what’s not to love about Ryan Reynolds prancing around in his iconic red and black suit killing bad guys and making smart-ass comments?

3. Ant-Man and The Wasp

Okay, okay, last superhero movie, I swear. I’ll admit, I was skeptical when Marvel announced they were doing an Ant-Man movie. I had very low expectations going into the first installment, but was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the movie! While the concept is pretty ridiculous, the movie really leaned into it and was willing to make more than a few jokes at its own expense. It was definitely one of the more humorous Marvel movies, with comedic powerhouses Paul Rudd and Michael Pena absolutely owning every scene. And that signature humor and lightheartedness seems to be back for the second movie in the franchise. This movie takes place before Infinity War, so it’s a step back from all the drama and intensity, which is definitely appreciated. This movie looks like it’ll be a lot of fun, so make sure to check it out!

4. Solo: A Star Wars Story

I’m a huge Star Wars fan. I grew up watching the Original Trilogy and the prequels and was absolutely blown away by how good The Force Awakens and Rogue One were, so I’m always excited when the Star Wars Universe expands a little bit more. Han Solo is definitely one of my favorite characters, so I’m excited to learn more about his backstory. In this movie, we’ll be getting appearances from faces old and new. We’ll get the story of how Han met his faithful friend and co-pilot Chewbacca, and we’ll also finally get to see how Han won the iconic Millenium Falcon from Donald Glover’s Lando Calrissian. We’ll also be introduced some new, never-before-seen characters: Game of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke will be playing a character from Han’s past, and Woody Harrelson will be playing a mentor character to the young Han. I’m excited to see how actor Alden Ehrenreich, whose turn in Hail, Caesar was widely lauded, compares to the iconic Harrison Ford performance!

5. Incredibles 2

It has been a long 14 years since the original Incredibles movie came out, but we’re finally getting the sequel we deserve with this summer’s Incredibles 2! All our favorite characters are back: Mr. And Mrs. Incredible, Violet, Dash, Jack-Jack, Edna Mode and of course, Frozone and his wife! This time, it’s Mrs. Incredible’s turn to go out and kick some ass, while her husband has to learn to deal with Violet’s growing pains, Dash’s hyperactivity, and Jack-Jack’s crazy array of superpowers. With this movie being 14 years in the making, I have super high expectations for this sequel, and judging by the awesome trailers, I can almost guarantee it’ll live up to the hype! If you’re looking to get a little bit swept away in nostalgia, this movie is a must-see!

6. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

This movie has two of my favorite things combined: Chris Pratt and dinosaurs. In the sequel to the box-office hit Jurassic World, this movie takes place in the aftermath of the original film. It seems like absolutely no one has learned from their mistakes as another vicious, genetically engineered dinosaur is on the loose once again. I love that these films pay homage to the original films while still bringing something new and exciting with heart-pounding action, stunning visual effects, and great characters. Also, this movie has Jeff Goldblum in it. And who doesn’t love Jeff Goldblum?

Hopefully, I’ve given you some inspiration to get out and go see one of these hyped up movies. While I do love enjoying some Netflix in bed, it can be a nice change of pace to go out to the movies. This summer’s movie selection definitely deserves some love, so if you’re going to treat yourself to a movie theater outing, make sure it’s one of these films!
