5 Things To Do When You Need a Study Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

In the throes of midterms season, it may seems like there is no end in sight. With projects and essays due and exams to study for, this list of relaxation tips will hopefully help get you get through it! Happy studying!

1. Talk to someone

Any type of human interaction is a good way to de-stress; so when you find a good stopping point, talk to someone you care about. Whether that be a friend, your mom, a sibling, or your dog, talking to someone will take your mind off your midterms, even if only for a second!

2. Take a shower

A quick, hot shower is one of my personal favorite ways to de-stress. It helps me feel refreshed and ready to take more notes and run through more flashcards! Up the spa factor and really pamper yourself; do a face mask, deep condition your hair, or even shave your legs if you need to. You deserve it after all that studying!

3. Watch something

If I feel like I’m at a point in my study time where I can take a break, I will often take some time to watch an episode of my current favorite show. It’s a really good way to break up the blocks of studying. I choose to watch something funny and lighthearted in times of stress; my go-to’s are Brooklyn Nine Nine or Parks and Recreation. If you don’t think you can spare that 30 minute run time, watch a quick YouTube video! Watching a funny vine compilation or a quick makeup tutorial in between chunks of study time always makes me feel a little bit more sane when I’m in the throes of finals or midterms.

4. Exercise

Getting your blood pumping and your heart rate up is a perfect way to take a study break. If you have time, sweat it out at the gym or go for a quick run! If you’re in your dorm room and truly can’t be bothered to change and head to FitRec, it’s easy to to do a couple jumping jacks, sit ups, and planks in the comfort of your own home! You can easily Google a quick exercise routine to do, or even find some YouTube videos to coach you through a quick workout! If you’re in the library or somewhere in public where you can’t just bust out some burpees, just take a quick trip to get coffee or walk around the room to clear your head and get your body up and moving. You can only sit still for so long before you go a little stir crazy!

5. Grab a snack

Grabbing a healthy snack can help fuel you up for more studying. But be mindful about what you put in your body, as junk food will just make you feel lethargic. Instead, grab some healthy brain fuel like a handful of nuts or a piece of fruit. You can reward yourself with some junk food or candy after you ace that big test!

Exams are tough, but hopefully one of these tips helped make studying just a little bit easier.
