Stranger Things: A Summer Phenomenon

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bryant chapter.

If you have been on the internet at all this summer you must’ve heard about Netflix’s newest original series, Stranger Things. It has been added to the long list of Netflix success stories, including Orange is the New Black, Narcos, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.  It is a creepy thriller about the supernatural. It had us sitting on the edge of our seats the whole time. The show is extremely unpredictable and features a strong young female lead named 11.  It all begins when a kid disappears while riding his bike near a mysterious facility on the edge of town. Without spoiling it, these are the reasons we love Stranger Things.

It focuses on a group of kids, who actually act like kids

Unlike other television shows featuring kids, this show seems less scripted when it comes to kids interacting. They’re young, immature, but cool in their own right. It is like watching your weird little brother that you’ve never had.

The lead is a badass female

11 is her name and she is quite the badass. She has supernatural powers and it is pretty awesome. The backstory for 11 is really complex and will have you guessing.

It focuses on the power of friendship, in a non-cheesy way

This show won’t give you the warm and fuzzies, but it will definitely help show how strong friendships can be. The boys refuse to give up on finding their friend and also teach 11 what friendship is.

It is creepy.

You really can’t tell who you should trust throughout the series. There is always suspicions against everyone.

It explores the hell that is “fitting in” during high school

There is the popular crowd, which Nancy a not-so-popular girl broke into by dating the coolest guy at school. Nancy tries to balance her new, cool life while still maintaining her friendship with Barb. It’ll make you feel #blessed that you’re in college now.

11 loves Eggo waffles

This isn’t really a reason to love the show but it is relatable AF, who doesn’t love Eggos?? Especially after a crazy night out.

It’ll mess with your brain

Throughout the whole series it is really difficult to determine who the actually crazy one is, which will mess with your head completely.

Season 2 is already confirmed

We don’t know about you, but hardly anything is worse for us than when our favorite shows only last a single season. The only thing that’s worse is when a certain show won’t stop producing seasons (cough, cough, PLL).

If you haven’t seen it yet, we recommend Stranger Things. With only eight episodes, it isn’t that hard to binge watch.
