Selena Gomez: New Music and Her Relationship With Justin Bieber

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bryant chapter.

That’s right folks, Selena Gomez has released new music for the first time since her Stars Dance album in July 2013. Selena had been dropping hints on Instagram, such as this picture:

With the caption “As I have a last listen, I thought a lot about my year. I thought a lot about my voice. And after a year of holding on. I think it’s time to start sharing. #November.”

And this photo, with the caption “…But I can’t imagine, a life without, breathless moments, breaking me down.” … #November.” These turned out to be lyrics from her new song.

Other than these hints, there had been no confirmed news of new music until Selena released her music video on the morning of Thursday, November 6. The single entitled “The Heart Wants What It Wants” debut at number 25 on Billboard Hot 100.

After the song was released, it was confirmed that a new album “For You” will be released on November 24. This seems to be a “greatest hits” album composed mostly of her reprised old hits.

As anyone who has watched the “Heart Wants What It Wants” video can probably figure out, the song is about Selena’s on-and-off boyfriend Justin Bieber.

The song starts with this heartbreaking monologue: “When I was on stage… and I was thinking… I felt like I know him though. I know his heart, and I know what he wouldn’t do to hurt me… but I didn’t realize feeling so confident, feeling so great about myself and then it just be completely shattered by one thing — by something so stupid. But then you make me feel crazy because you make me feel like it’s my fault. I was in pain.”

The song goes on to describe how it feels being stuck in an unhealthy relationship. Selena sings, “Save your advice cause I won’t hear. You might be right but I don’t care. There’s a million reasons why I should give you up. But the heart wants what it wants.” The video is sadder, more serious, and sexier than anything Selena has released before.

If you weren’t already rooting for Selena to leave Justin for good, you will be after watching the video. Let’s be real: it’s time for Selena to find someone who will make her nothing but happy. We have high hopes for Selena- in an interview with Ryan Seacrest on November 7, she said that in the past year she has learned how to love herself first. She said “It’s okay. I’m going to stop when I need to stop. I’m going to feel when I need to feel. And I don’t care what comes with that or what people want to say.” When asked about her relationship with Justin, Selena said, “I support him. I think I always will.” She said that the filming of the video, which took place over a year ago, was extremely therapeutic and she has learned a lot about herself since then. We’re rooting for Selena and can’t wait to hear the rest of the album.
