How to be a Great Customer, as Told by a Waitress

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bryant chapter.

1.       Put your phone away when you are speaking to us.

This is at the top of the list because a waitress hates when customers say their orders while talking on the phone, and then complain when their food comes and they forgot to add something.

2.       Do not take forever to order.

Waitresses have many tasks and we hate when our time is wasted.

3.       Do not stay at your table for too long.

We could have served another party and earned more tips in the time you spent lingering.

4.       Tip us well.

This is important because waitresses get paid less than minimum wage, so most of their earnings are from tips. Don’t spend all of your money on your meal and leave us with a minuscule tip. The average tip should be 15-20% of the bill, regardless of whether you liked your meal or not.

5.       Be polite!

This may seem like common sense, but some customers do not say “please” or “thank you.”

6.       If we run out of something in the kitchen or your steak is medium rather than medium rare, do not yell at us.

We just take the orders and don’t have control over what goes on in the kitchen.

7.       Do not tell us you are in a rush.

Again, we do not have control over the kitchen. If you are really in a rush, try a fast food restaurant.
