Spring Weekend Is HERE!

Every year, just before finals, Brown students are treated to a weekend like no other. Spring Weekend is filled with concerts, food, and lots and lots of tank tops. This tradition dates back to 1960, and over the years big names like Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and U2 have serenaded eager (and most times inebriated) Brunonians.

The tradition continues this year with headliner Kendrick Lamar Saturday night, considered a rising star in the hip-hop world, and DJ A-Trak on Friday, infamous for his “Barbra Streisand” remix.  Indie synth group The Dirty Projectors and alternative rock band Deerhunter will be opening for Lamar.

Monday morning we all hurriedly rushed to our computers hoping to be one of the lucky few to secure tickets for both nights. Sadly, most of us failed miserably, and Brown Concert Agency, the student-run group that puts on Spring Weekend, blamed its ticketing website crash on a thirdy-party service that processed credit card information, TouchNet. BCA explained that the University forced them to use this service, though it is slower and less efficient. A friend of mine said it best: “Screw coal. We need to get the corporation to divest from TouchNet.”

But despite some technological difficulties, tickets were thankfully on sale once again Monday at 8 PM, and most students proceeded smoothly with their ticket purchases. Another batch of 1200 tickets sold early today at 7 AM.

And now what? You’ve bought your ticket, got your “whistle while you twerk” tank top (my personal favorite!!), and have been working out all winter to show off your hot bod! But now we must wait and pray to the weather gods that be. The forecast is saying rain for Saturday and breezy temperatures all weekend, hanging in the 50s. BCA notoriously pulls the concert indoors if there is a slight chance of rain, due to immense costs if they set up outside and are forced to move indoors because of inclement weather. Apparently if indoors the will be in Meehan on Pembroke, but I really hope not. BCA will make the final call on Wednesday night.

So readers, let’s cross our fingers, get our homework done early this week, and make this Spring Weekend one for the record books!
