A Lack of DiversityBy March 1, 2012 - 8:09pm The 84th Annual Academy Awards was the event of the season for some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. This evening of glitz and glamour was filled with everything from Billy Crystal’s tired and recycled jokes, to an oddly scheduled, but enchanting Cirque du Soleil performance paying homage to film history. But missing from the evening (and perhaps every single Award night before that) was diversity. Does there need to be Slumdog Millionaire or Precious every year in order to showcase a diverse cast? That shouldn’t have to be the case. Seeing Octavia Spencer tearfully choke through her acceptance speech made me realize just how few and far between these awards went to actors of color. READ MORE |

Relax or Escape?By February 28, 2012 - 1:39am The second or third question I ask people when I meet them is “Do you watch Game of Thrones?”. Yes, initially it seems like it’s a weird way to dive into a conversation, but television shows have become an integral part of American culture. Asking about a fantasy series, is akin to asking about music taste, or the collegiate introductory question, “What’s your concentration?”. Socially, we find comfort in commonality, and television has become a marker a shared cultural experience. READ MORE |

Have Contiki, Will Travel - Win the Trip of a Lifetime!By February 10, 2012 - 2:12pm It’s safe to say that for most of us at Brown, studying abroad is part of our college plan. But even with a study abroad plan in the works (or behind you), when Spring begins to peak through the clouds, the travel itch starts, and dreaming about a epic Euro-trip or an Australian adventure becomes a daily distraction when struggling through our oh-so-boring lectures. But planning a trip abroad can be scary, time consuming, and let's not forget--super expensive. Lucky for us, Her Campus has partnered with Contiki, the #1 travel company for young people, offering over 200 guided tours and pre-planned trips in 40+ countries, exclusively for 18-35-year-olds—all for amazingly low prices!... |

Marni for H&MBy December 5, 2011 - 11:37pm In November Versace launche its capsule collection with H&M. To say it was a success is an understatement. By 5pm that day, all stores in New York had sold out. Pairing with H&M has become a perfect combination for haute couture houses to penetrate the mass market. People who could only dream of designer clothing can now access it if they are patient enough and stand in line for a few hours. The reason these golden teams have worked so well — think Karl Lagerfeld, Jimmy Choo, Stella McCartney — is because designers are not willing to compromise craftsmanship. They strive to use, yes, cheaper materials, but the fit, the style and the trademsrks that define the brands are still there in all their glory. On March 12 prepare it's Marni's turn.... |

Dye it, Trim it, Chop it offBy November 29, 2011 - 6:43pm I like to think that reading people is not an easy task. Sure, you can read between the lines, facial expressions and body language, but you can never get the perfect answer. The truth is, we are only brutally honest with ourselves, and even then we lie. I have to admit, there are several days when I wake up wishing I could hide in READ MORE |

Homeless in the 02912By November 7, 2011 - 10:13pm I write from the cosy stacks of the Rock. As I look outside to take in the gorgeous view of the Quiet Green, I spot a professor cheerfully cycling to downtown Providence in his sandals. A few smokers take their jackets off and turn their faces towards the sun. A girl walks her dog in a pink sundress that she probably kept on the hanger in hopes of 60-degree afternoons like this one. Everywhere I look, happy smiles, bright colours and a show of skin. READ MORE |

Advertising WeekBy October 12, 2011 - 12:53am Last week, I was able to catch the second half of Advertising Week, which is an annual conference (the eighth one this year) held in New York City. It consisted of free pens, mints, crepes, cups of Nespresso, and five days of presentations and panels from both brand and agency sides. It was the friendliest professional get together I had ever been to—and most invigorating, I’d say—out of any of the conferences I have attended in the past. To my surprise, all of the panels I checked out had at least one woman on stage as a panellist (except for one: “Perfomance Display… The New Search?” which starred an all male cast from Google, Criteo, CBS Interactive, NBC Universal and Admeld).
