The college experience, Welcome to your future!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Broward chapter.

The college experience is a far cry from High School, in the fact that the classes can be anywhere from 20 in the classroom to 200 in a lecture hall.  The boys are both more handsome and mature, not to mention actually knowing how to treat a lady right, “like holding doors, or actually offering to help when you need it.  So, ladies, “be careful what you wish for, you just might find, “No just kidding,” but seriously, the men are not all brawn or just looking for their next fling, they actually have brains and know how to use them, when it comes to the ladies that is!

Here at Broward College North Campus, there is a lot for the female students to see and do, from clubs like “Her Campus Broward and Complexion,” to events like Self-defense training which cater strictly to women.  Or you can choose to start your own club or trend, the sky’s the limit with your future and what you make of it!  For the academic minded, there are many pathways to choose from, many career paths to explore, and with honors societies like “Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), Sigma Kappa Delta (SKD), National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS), and even Student Veterans of America (SVA),” all offering scholarships, lifelong support, guidance, and a sense of belonging to those who need it.  There is something for everyone here.

Now on a more serious note, it is always good to think about and know what thing really interests you the most, so that you can explore them first.  Whether it be a specific program, subject matter, or world issue, then you should meet with an advisor to help create an academic plan, which will be your class road map to follow to graduation.  But above all, do not worry if you have not decided yet because you will always have time to decide later.   Like myself, I encourage you to explore every career path, every on-campus club, and above all anything and everything that interests you.  In the end, you may be as surprised as I was where you end up!

The best advice that I can give you is to, keep your options open, explore every possibility, consider the things that interest you most then explore them first.  Next, talk to an Academic Advisor who can steer you in the right direction, and remember that some programs have clubs attached like, Arts and Theater, English, Computers, sciences such as Nursing, Physical and Massage Therapy, Psychology, and Sociology, which are there to help with homework, suggest professors, or to just help to explore your chosen career option!  Once you have made your choice, you must remember to register for your classes as early as possible, because the best professor’s classes fill up quickly.  Unlike High school, it is your own responsibility to pick your own classes, so choose wisely, and checking “Rate My Professor.com” can sometimes help also, but a word of caution to be careful with this site.  There have been passed occurrences where students have written bad evaluations of professor just because they were given a bad grade.  I personally like to schedule meetings with the Department Deans for advice when choosing a processor, because they are always willing to make suggestions as well as giving you great advice on how to better navigate through their particular programs.  I also like to meet with each professor prior to the start of classes so that I can have an idea of what to expect from them, and what they expect of me.  By doing this, you can learn what subject matter you need to know prior to the start of class, so that you may be better prepared.  Whatever you decide, just remember that your future is now in your own hands, so make it a good one!
