A closer look at Chanel Samson, the Person Behind The Chapter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Broward chapter.

How long have you been with Her Campus?

I’ve been reading Her Campus for over a year, but I found out that Her Campus was run by college students in November 2016. That was when I was fixed on bringing it to Broward College.

What other positions have you held in BC?

Wow. I can honestly say that half my closet consists of broward college clothes from multiple positions at BC. I’ve been crowned Miss Broward College 2016, joined the English Honors society along with a bunch of other clubs, Cofounded Her Campus as President, and joined Student Life as an orientation leader. Needless to say, I’m the epitome of what it means to be #BCproud

What have you taken from working with Her Campus?

Delegation was a huge issue for me before Her Campus. I wanted to take on everything myself and not entrust anyone with responsibilities. Working on a team of about 20 talented women, I had to learn how to trust my team and by doing so, I found out they were more than capable. There’s a quote that goes “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much”. In four short months, we’ve accomplished more than I ever thought possible and it wasn’t because I’m a great leader, it’s because I have an amazing team. I also learned to plan for everything, then go with the flow because no matter how much you anticipate, people aren’t perfect and things don’t always go as planned so it’s important to be equally as forgiving and understanding as you are organized and professional.

What made you want to start a chapter?

Every other campus has its own publication and I saw a need at North for many talented students who wanted to get their voices and stories out online. North campus has such a distinct and vibrant personality and Student Life of its own that I’ve realized most students on other campuses don’t know about. This magazine celebrates all that North Campus had to offer, so that when we graduate and others take our place, we have something to look back on and be proud about. I certainly am!

Are you sad to be leaving it?

I really am. Her Campus has done so much for me in terms of experience and friendship, but I do want to branch out to other job related experience outside of the college. But I will always be grateful for Her Campus and acknowledge that I am a better leader because of it. I am looking to intern for the national site, so stay tuned!

What was the most memorable experience at Her Campus?

There were so many memories, but if I had to pick, it would be our Color run. We raised a large amount of money for a good cause and the result was an outstanding and colourful success. The pictures are preserved in our hall of fame at BC forever!

What do you hope to leave behind now that you’re stepping down?

I’d like to hope that Her Campus will stay strong and continue the legacy that I left behind. It wasn’t a perfect journey and there is much still to be improved upon. I hope that the new team will come in and be willing to take that challenge. Not to be carbon copies of me, but to lead and inspire in their own unique way.
