Your Boyfriend May Be Allowed to Sleep at Brenau

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brenau chapter.

The Student Government Association proposed a new policy that will allow male guests to stay in the dorms overnight if approved. That basically means your boyfriend might finally be able to spend the night in your dorm. With full consent from your roommate, of course. How exciting is that?!

Student Government Association President, Sara Hubaishi says, “A lot of students have come to SGA in the past about the unfair policy.” She recognizes that students at Brenau who have girlfriends can allow their significant other to spend the night whenever they choose. “Boyfriends cannot spend the night.” SGA got the policy passed 13-0, which means it was a unanimous decision.

“It is in the process of being approved by my staff,” says Amanda Lammers, Vice President of Student Services. The current policy is that male guests, including fathers, sons, and brothers, are prohibited from staying in any dorms or in campus apartment complexes past 12 am. Male guests must be off campus completely by 2 am. If a male guest is caught spending the night, the repercussions can be terrifying. Like… honor court terrifying.

So what kinds of things will you have to do in order to have your male guest approved to spend the night? Along with having to escort the male guest everywhere you go, Male guests will have to fill out an electronic form, send it to the Director of Residence Life, and copy the Security staff, the respective resident assistant, and roommate at least 24 hours in advance in order to be eligible to spend the night. The male guest will not be allowed to spend the night in a resident’s room for more than three consecutive nights, but cannot exceed eight nights within a 30 day period.

With the new drafted policy, open visitation hours will change from 12 pm – 12 am to 10 am- 12 pm. After 12 a.m., the male guest is considered an overnight resident and should have the proper paperwork. “We haven’t gotten specific hours because it hasn’t gotten approved yet,” says Resident Assistant Samiro Mohamed. “Nothing in this is finalized.”

Hubaishi is optimistic about the policy change. “I know that there are some students that will feel weird about this policy change, but I strongly believe that it will improve the life of residents.”
