When to Tell Your SO Goodbye

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brenau chapter.

When you’re in a relationship for a while, you generally fall in love with that person. However, sometimes that relationship ends very toxic. Nobody deserves to be in a toxic relationship. Ever. I was in a toxic relationship that was off and on for two years. It took two years for me to say good bye to a very abusive guy.

At the beginning, everything was great just like most relationships are. I was actually able to see a future with this guy, but I could not have been more wrong. This guy turned out to be one of my greatest fears in life. He became super abusive within the first year of our relationship, but I saw right past that. I did not listen to everyone who was saying that I should have left him the second he was becoming mentally abusive, but I decided not to listen to all of them.

So, ladies and gentlemen, if your significant other is hurting you in anyway, leave that person. They obviously don’t deserve you, and you do not deserve the disrespect and pain that goes along with it. Nobody deserves to go through that much torture, especially from one person.

If somebody thinks they can disrespect you because they’re dating you, they need a reality check. It does not matter how much you love them. Your self worth comes first. You deserve to feel safe when you are with the person because there is a good chance that you will become too scared to leave, and then it may be too late. I know. I was in that position a year ago, and I could not be happier. Do I still get scared at times? Yes, but am I safe now? Also yes. If you are in an abusive relationship, there is still time for you to get out while you can. Do yourself that one favor, and I promise you will thank yourself later on for getting out of that situation when you did.
