NBA All-Star Weekend Is Back and Better

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brenau chapter.

All star weekend is something all NBA lovers look forward to. It gives us a chance to enjoy the game of basketball from our favorite players in the NBA combining into an East vs West show down. The weekend began in New Orleans on February 17th with the Celebrity all star game. All happened in the celebrity match up as the game is always entertaining to watch. Mark Cuban and Donald Trump have been twitter rattling for a minute now and Cuban wanted to take a direct shot at Trump by wearing the number 46 on his game jersey. Implying that Trump is the 45th President and he will be the 46th. The battle continues between the two as the war on twitter escalates. The East killed the West team with a 88-59 victory. Some may argue that the West was missing 4 time Celebrity All-Star Game MVP Kevin Hart to lead them to victory. He explained in this failed “30 For 30” episode that he lost his love for the game and that is why he didn’t play. From the mannequin challenge to a signature elbow pass made by Jason Williams to impersonating James Harden infamous footwork by Brandon Armstrong the Celebrity All-Star Game was hilarious to watch. I just loved the smooth pass from Master P to his son Romeo. Family goals right?

On Saturday the NBA D-League All-Star Game was played at 2:30 pm. Quit Cook won the game MVP award stating that he viewed this game as not just fun but an outlet for him to move up to the next level in the NBA.

“I kind of knew it wasn’t just a fun alley-oop, shooting half-court shots [type of] game. It’s another audition,” Cook voiced after the game. “It’s business. It’s professional. Coach [Jerry] Stackhouse had us ready.” Though the game was full of spectacular moves and handles the East outplayed the West to win by just five points. The final score was 105-100. Saturday ended with the State Farm All-Star Saturday night which included the Taco Bell Skills Challenge, JBL Three-Point Contest and the Verizon Slam Dunk event. New York Knicks’ Kristaps Porzingis won the Skills Challenge by going through a series of obstacles while timed to show off their passing dribbling and shooting. Eric Gordon from the Houston Rockets represented them well in the Three-Point Contest while leaving runner-up Kyrie Irving in the dust. scoring 21 points from three and becoming the first ever in Rocket’s franchise history to win the contest. What seemed to be the most interesting event of the night where Glenn Robinson III wins the Slam Dunk contest. He got the best score in the quickest amount of time.

Lastly, the main event was finally held on Sunday to end the NBA All-Star Weekend. This marks the 66th time the NBA has had an All-Star Game. Both teams scoring almost 200 points was clearly an offensive battle between the two teams. Anthony Davis won the MVP as he led the West to victory in his Pelican fans’ city. He seemed to feel right at home as he scored 52 points. The final score of the game 192-182 as teammates like Westbrook helped pass the ball into Davis to beat Wilt Chamberlain’s scoring record of 42 points. In other news, Westbrook and Kevin Durant finally spoke to eat other and even shared a pass or two while commentators rang out “Can’t we all just get along?” The two have had beef since Durant left Oklahoma City Thunder to join the Warriors last year and finally the silence has been broken. Sitting courtside was the fabulous, pregnant Beyonce, her husband JayZ and Blue Ivy along with celebs Athony Anderson, Fat Joe, Michael B. Jordan, Chris Tucker, Spike Lee and many more.New Orleans knows how to bring out the celbrities. An eventful All-Star weekend has once came and gone. Now, it is time for the teams to put their game faces back on as they near playoff time.
