Tips on How to Get Soft Skin During the Winter

Thursday, February 2, 2012

Just because the weather outside is cold, dry and unpleasing doesn’t mean your skin has to be. Winter is one of the most beautiful seasons in the year, especially in places where it snows; but the coldness and the wind of the outside combined with the heaters on the inside can make for very dry skin.

Think about it this way, if you change your wardrobe during the winter then you should definitely change what you put on your skin. Even if rosy cheeks and red noses look cute during the winter, dry, itchy and uncomfortable skin definitely does not.

Thankfully there are many solutions to cure a winter itch. First, don’t shower with super hot water, try lukewarm water instead; really hot water takes the natural moisture from the skin leaving it extra dry and unsightly, especially during the cold months in the winter. Also, don’t scrub everyday (this is another way of taking the natural moisture from the skin), instead try scrubbing once a week or once every two weeks. Keep in mind that some soaps can be drying, so invest in a moisturizing body wash like Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Body Wash or St Ives Collagen Elastin Moisturizing Body Wash.

Remember that the face, lips, feet and hands need special attention too. Moisturize your hands after every time you wash them; keeping a small moisturizing lotion in your purse is a great way to remember to do this; Warm Vanilla and Sugar from Bath and Body Works is perfect because of its travel size, plus it smells delicious. For the lips, go for something with a touch of color like the Strawberry Born Lippy Balm from The Body Shop; you can look pretty and avoid the pain and embarrassment of chapped lips, all at the same time.

When it comes to your face, Neutrogena has some great moisturizers that will be gentle and won’t clog your pores which is a must if you are using a product for the skin on your face which is extra sensitive, plus a lot of them are oil free and have SPF protection (just because you can’t see the sun doesn’t mean its not hurting your skin).  Finally, go for something fresh and moisturizing for your feet, True Blue Super Rich Foot Cream from Bath and Body Works is perfect and hydrating during this time of the year.

The products you use on your skin should be updated frequently, especially during the winter. Remember to try new products with different moisture levels, smells (and from different brands) in order to find the ones that work best for you.
